Night of the Hunter

I think its supposed to be "La Nuit du chasseur" which is the French title of the movie "The Night of the Hunter" The movie is about a man who steals money and is sentenced to death for it and his cell mate tries to get him to reveal the location but he won't and only tells his son the location which leads the cell mate to marry his widow after his execution in an attempt to get close to his kids and find out the location of the money. The kids eventually escape with the money and he "hunts" them. I think this song tells a tale of being born of a society/people that are like the thief in the movie, but you can rise above it and escape and to not be afraid of the night and the hunt because society/people will try to destroy you (like the cell mate) and hunt you. And the line "Honest to God, I'll break your heart Tear you to pieces and rip you apart" seems to be a statement made my the world/society. You will be broken, your heart will be ripped apart by this world but you can rise above it. This line reminds me a lot of The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi by The Receiving End of Sirens (AMAZING concept album) especially their songs "Swallow People Whole" and "Stay Small"

Anyone else get pumped up while listening to this? What an amazing song

There is one part of the lyrics I think i figuerd out and that is

"pray to your god, open your heart. whatever you do, dont be afraid of the dark. Cover your eyes, the devin's inside"

One guy explained this part as something religous, and well duh.. who wouldnt. But I think its the direct opposite.. The "devil" is inside each and everyone of us, not as an entity but more like a "dark" side and "dont be afraid of the dark" cause its part of who we are. Dont walk around thinking your a saint, given the right circumstances anyone can become a person you today would spit at if you saw him/her. Maybe Im wrong, but beliving this make me a better person. Always aware of my flaws and not letting them hurt anyone by letting them out of control. Yep Im going abit extreme here but the lyrics in this song touches me deeply. And good god its powerful song aswell :)

Actually, given the bits that are in French, this just always reminded me of the Count of Monte Cristo. Viewed through that lens, it really ties all of the directions this goes through together, particularly the bit about

If I remember correctly, in the original book, the Count kills Mercedes, and this little stanza, I guess, kind of points to this "stranger" going back and "meeting" all of the people who wrecked his life.

I agree with the people who are hinting towards a meaning about revenage and i see how you can tie the first verse with the movie and with Jared's childhood but i am also wondering if the second part of the first verse has anything to do with the law suit with the record company cause when he says,"I was hung from a tree made of tongues of the weak The branches, the bones of the liars, the thieves", it sounds to me like he is saying someone threw him under the bus aka the record company.

When I first saw the title, I instantly thought of the film Night of the Hunter. The second verse can definitely be applied to the film (without giving too much away): his marrying the cell mate's widow, his hunt for the children and the money, his murderous rage towards "loose women". As for the first verse, I'm not as sure. It could be about having a horrible childhood and rising above it to "get revenge" on those who did him wrong. But he's going about it in a violent and sociopathic manner. "I was hung from a tree made of tongues of the weak/The branches, the bones of the liars, the thieves" sounds like he was verbally attacked by those of weak mind and will, like "the liars, the thieves". Branches and bones can be related metaphorically (branches are the bones of a tree?)

As for the bridge I relate this more to the film. The villain is a preacher and killer, which explains the biblical references like "Pray to your god, open your heart", and he's after two kids. "Whatever you do, don't be afraid of the dark" sounds like something you'd say to a kid to calm them down and get what you want out of them. As for "Cover your eyes, the devil's inside" sounds like he's trying to warn people to stay away from him, same with "Honest to God, I'll break your heart/Tear you to pieces and rip you apart".

I wish I knew why I didn't listen to this song when the album first came out! It could easily become my new favorite.

First off I would like to say that this band is super sick!!! 2nd...I am NOT RELIGIOUS, i live my life with an open mind, and 3rd...you probably won't believe the second thing I told you after my interpretation of this super sick song.

Jared is relating life events and instances maybe based on personal experience or self enlightenment through his infamous analogies. I think he is trying to say that People are going to talk crap about you, they will try to bring you down and make you miserable like them. Don't let them bring you down, stay focus and pray for strength and have faith in your god. The devil is constantly trying to plant doubt in your mind and wants you to doubt your god which makes you on the devil's side. He workds through people as well as many other ways. Don't be afraid, trust and have faith in your god and you will have the strength you need to rise above it all and not fall into the traps of these people and the devil.

So a "bastards daughter" was everything you ever wanted in a girl, but instead you choose to continue to be a "player". Little by little you break her down, brought down her self esteem and broke her heart, hurt her in so many ways its as if she is no longer the same person. Take a step back and realize what you are doing and what kind of girl you have, what you are about to lose. Treat others as you would want to be treated. you never know when someone is trying to get revenge, which is the devils work. You need to pray to your god and believe in him cause without him you have nothing.

Again, I am NOT RELIGIOUS! this is my simple interpretation of this song based on my analysis of the lyrics and the history of the band.
