Hollow Talk Lyrics

Echo stutters across a room
Trembling noises that come too soon
Spacial movements which seems to near
Resonating a mask of fear

Hollow talk and a hollow gain
Thoughts set out for the root of pain
Never said it was good, never said it was near
shadow rises when you are here

And then you cut
You cut it up
And everything goes back to the beginning

Silence seazes a cluttered room
Light is shed not a breath too soon
Darkness rises and all you do
Is tighten your jaw and cross the room

Spacial movements are born of light
Shadow scatter without a fight
It has never been bad there has always been truth
Muted wisper the things you move

And then you cut
You cut it up
And everything goes back to the beginning

I agee a very addictive and beautiful song.

I think the song could be about one of two things, a relationship that is falling apart, or a person who is reminiscing his childhood and events regarding his parents divorce. Personally I lean more toward the latter of the two possibilities. Partly because there is almost no love in this song, as there ought to be had it been regarding a romantic relationship. Secondly the very important line "And everything goes back to the beginning" suggests that its the latter of the two.

So what is this persons past and why is it important? It all seems to be regarding some conflict perhaps a trauma in childhood, the "trembling noices that come to soon" suggest that something is nearing him and is destroying his otherwise perhaps peaceful childhood. And the next line "resonating your mask of feud" again suggests that something is fake or out of order. Personally I think he is describing one of his parents, and since he goes on to say "hollow girl" in the next line I think he is describing his mother in his early childhood and perhaps its a divorce that is nearing, and destroying his childhood euphoria.

after this first part of the song music plays and we get the "Never said it was good" and "Shadows raises and you are here" suggesting something has changed to the worse, perhaps at this point the divorce is final, and he now lives with a mom who is struggling to make ends meet, and who still is hurt from the divorce the "Shadows raises and you are here" definetly suggest that are some unresolved issues regarding the divorce and all-in-all in his childhood.

"and then you cut" The "you" person in this line could be either of his parent, I think its his mom though. And as we've reached sofar she is not a happy person, but a person filled with anger. "you cut it out" what she cuts out must be love, or at least the capacity for love. As the divorce must've changed her view on this. "and everything goes back to the beginning" she doesnt realize why she does this, but the main character the man who is reminiscing his childhood and the events regarding his parents divorce realizes that his mom's behavior is due the events regarding the divorce and the feelings that were hurt at the time.

"Silence seizes a cluttered room, Light is shed not a breath too soon. Darkness rises in all you do, Standing and drawn across the room. Spatial movements are butterflies Shadows scatter without a fire." These lines again describes this "you" person that could be either of his parents, or even himself. I think these lines speaks for themselves. Needless to say things are bad.

"There's never been bad, there has always been truth, Muted whisper of the things she'll move." Ahh a "she" character perhaps it was his mother he was describing all along then. muted whispers must be a metaphor for what she has cut out earlier in the song. exactly what its she'll move or even if that is supposed to be analyzed as a metaphor is bit unknown to me.

"Never said it was good, never said it was new, Muted whisper of the things you feel. " of course as she has cut out her love and thereby her capacity to feel, the 'whispers of the things you feel are muted'

Good explanation. There is one more thing that makes sense to me. It could be about some kind of mental disorder. The girl would symbolize that disorder. There is part when this person trying fight with illness but then shadows swallow him again and everything goes back to beggining. He just continue in downward spiral.

Just a detail: from what i hear, i think the correct line is "You cut it OFF" -The meaning would be just slightly different, yeah- BTW I recommend everyone to check out the danish film "SUBMARINO" where i could hear that song. AWESOME film.

The song is about the process of writing a song. The band members are stuck and do not know what to write. The tried a lot but it's not working, every time they have to start over again. "And then you cut You cut it out And everything Goes back to the beginning" Every band member is working on their own and when they come together the texts they wrote individually are regarded as 'hollow talk' meaning nothing they want to do better but each of them fear the opinion of the other members "Never said it was good, never said it was near Shadow rises and you are here" They need to learn how to trust each other.

Saga is the hollow girl

My Opinion

If you have not yet seen it, you definitely need to watch the Swedish/Danish series Bron/Broen. This song is the soundtrack and its melancholy matches the dim, blue light of Scandinavia and the bridge between Malmoe and Copenhagen.

As for my interpretation of this song I too find it quite dark and lacking of love. Yet, I think that the line "There's never been bad, there has always been truth" corresponds well to the ending of a romantic relationship. Indeed, sometimes words are the most hurtful when their aim is to tell the truth and not to hurt. Thus, I get the feeling that this is a person reflecting over a relationship going to an end.

"Echoes start as a cross in you, Trembling noises that come too soon Spatial movement which seems to you, Resonating your mask or feud Hollow talking and hollow girl, Force it up from the root of pain"

This verse is as beautiful as it is haunting, and I interpret the "hollow talking and hollow girl" together with the "mask or feud" as a problem between two lovers that neither want to address because of its potential consequences. Instead the echoes from the fight -- aka the feeling of despair -- is muted, not talked about, yet multiplies in the space between them. Although they try to pretend it's not there by talking, all they say to each other will be hollow unless they adress the issue, which is how I interpret the line "force it up from the root of pain". They try to shut out the hurtful echoes of what has been said, but fail.

Silence seizes a cluttered room, Light is shed not a breath too soon Darkness rises in all you do, Standing and drawn across the room Spatial movements are butterflies Shadows scatter without a fire

I see "Silence seizes a cluttered room" as a symbol for the space between the two lovers. The silence is the issue not being addressed and the "cluttered room" is their minds, or their relationship/life together, filled with emotions and thoughts that are never spoken. When "light is shed not a breath too soon" and "darkness rises in all you do" they have finally come to terms with what is happening and are letting go of their love. As a consequence, they stop pretending and everything becomes tainted with their feelings of despair.

There's never been bad, there has always been truth, Muted whisper of the things she'll move

And here it is again: the reflection of the relationship going to an end and him trying to be objective about what went wrong. He might be unable to explain why he wants out, since there's never been bad, three has always been truth.

And then you cut You cut it out And everything Goes back to the beginning

This part can either be the couple being too scared to end things even if they should, or a symbol of starting all over again, with a new life, without the person you've shared it with before.

Never said it was good, never said it was new, Muted whisper of the things you feel

Theese lines do however amplify the feeling of the couple being too afraid to act on what they know and instead go back to the whispering, the hollow talk and the echo of what has been said and done. They give up trying to talk about what they really feel and settle with a loveless life because the thought of being alone scares them more.

All in all I think I see this as one person in a relationship knowing it is too late to save it, but trying to talk himself out of leaving. Yet, pretending does nothing to repair the damage and instead they are left with hollow talk that creates distances even greater than they were before.

My Interpretation
