| Choir of Young Believers – Hollow Talk Lyrics | 10 years ago |

If you have not yet seen it, you definitely need to watch the Swedish/Danish series Bron/Broen. This song is the soundtrack and its melancholy matches the dim, blue light of Scandinavia and the bridge between Malmoe and Copenhagen. As for my interpretation of this song I too find it quite dark and lacking of love. Yet, I think that the line "There's never been bad, there has always been truth" corresponds well to the ending of a romantic relationship. Indeed, sometimes words are the most hurtful when their aim is to tell the truth and not to hurt. Thus, I get the feeling that this is a person reflecting over a relationship going to an end. "Echoes start as a cross in you, Trembling noises that come too soon Spatial movement which seems to you, Resonating your mask or feud Hollow talking and hollow girl, Force it up from the root of pain" This verse is as beautiful as it is haunting, and I interpret the "hollow talking and hollow girl" together with the "mask or feud" as a problem between two lovers that neither want to address because of its potential consequences. Instead the echoes from the fight -- aka the feeling of despair -- is muted, not talked about, yet multiplies in the space between them. Although they try to pretend it's not there by talking, all they say to each other will be hollow unless they adress the issue, which is how I interpret the line "force it up from the root of pain". They try to shut out the hurtful echoes of what has been said, but fail. Silence seizes a cluttered room, Light is shed not a breath too soon Darkness rises in all you do, Standing and drawn across the room Spatial movements are butterflies Shadows scatter without a fire I see "Silence seizes a cluttered room" as a symbol for the space between the two lovers. The silence is the issue not being addressed and the "cluttered room" is their minds, or their relationship/life together, filled with emotions and thoughts that are never spoken. When "light is shed not a breath too soon" and "darkness rises in all you do" they have finally come to terms with what is happening and are letting go of their love. As a consequence, they stop pretending and everything becomes tainted with their feelings of despair. There's never been bad, there has always been truth, Muted whisper of the things she'll move And here it is again: the reflection of the relationship going to an end and him trying to be objective about what went wrong. He might be unable to explain why he wants out, since there's never been bad, three has always been truth. And then you cut You cut it out And everything Goes back to the beginning This part can either be the couple being too scared to end things even if they should, or a symbol of starting all over again, with a new life, without the person you've shared it with before. Never said it was good, never said it was new, Muted whisper of the things you feel Theese lines do however amplify the feeling of the couple being too afraid to act on what they know and instead go back to the whispering, the hollow talk and the echo of what has been said and done. They give up trying to talk about what they really feel and settle with a loveless life because the thought of being alone scares them more. All in all I think I see this as one person in a relationship knowing it is too late to save it, but trying to talk himself out of leaving. Yet, pretending does nothing to repair the damage and instead they are left with hollow talk that creates distances even greater than they were before. |
