Scumbag Blues Lyrics
Innocence has no resistance
against a wicked counsellor such as I.
You won't make it out.
Shall I lead you to my parlour,
poison offers disguised, in just your size.
You won't make it out.
You may think me altruistic,
feel my dark hypnosis closing in.
You won't make it out.
Then you grow cold,
cold
as a stare.
As if no,
none,
could compare.
But you don't know,
how close,
to ensnare.
When I control,
you will
despair.
Sycophancy, solipsistic,
SPIDER PLAYS THE FOOL
TO LURE THE FLY.
You won't make it out.
Then you grow cold,
cold
as a stare.
As if no,
none,
could compare.
But you don't know,
how close,
to ensnare.
When I control,
you will
despair.
against a wicked counsellor such as I.
You won't make it out.
Shall I lead you to my parlour,
poison offers disguised, in just your size.
You won't make it out.
You may think me altruistic,
feel my dark hypnosis closing in.
You won't make it out.
cold
as a stare.
As if no,
none,
could compare.
But you don't know,
how close,
to ensnare.
When I control,
you will
despair.
SPIDER PLAYS THE FOOL
TO LURE THE FLY.
You won't make it out.
cold
as a stare.
As if no,
none,
could compare.
But you don't know,
how close,
to ensnare.
When I control,
you will
despair.

This song makes me feel as though the devil is inside the music kinda thing. "You may think me altruistic, feel my dark hympnosis closing in" Kinda makes me think about people blindly listening to songs and relating to the artist and trusting what they tell us wether conciously or sub-conciously but when this effect has taken over the listener and controls them in a way and then "you wont make it out" of the spell?
The spider playing the fool is the music artist appearing a friendly cool person that naturally the fans idolise and respect and think they can relate to so they get lured into the web not knowing that this artist doesnt care about the fans at all and has a part in a dark agenda i.e. illuminati/the reptiles/ kings of the zoo etc that are common theme in this album.
Kind of gives me a vibe of the devil in disguise trying to take your soul with an eerie but still welcoming kind of vibe its pretty cool. But you dont know... how close... to ensnare... When the devil controls the world you will despair.
Uh Yeah...
Oh, and the "innocence has no resistance" line is like saying the innocent people i.e. regular listener who doesnt read into the lyrics so they are innocent/dumb and thus dont realise the "dark hypnosis" thats going on so they cant resist it.

Dancing in Daffodils makes me think of music and hypnosis/spells too.

@RoboticMamboMe I might go even further to say that this is about the music industry, which Josh has written about before. He absolutely loathes it, but is ensnared within it, knowing that in order to "keep food on the table" and support his family, he's forced into a deal with the devil within the demonic music industry, which is known for chewing up artists and spitting them out without blinking an eye.

The title of this song is Scumbag Blues, not just Scumbag.
"You may think me altruistic..." - Whoever is speaking is really a scumbag, but when people meet him/her, they're all nice and friendly and ready to give them what they want, but really they're only interested in themselves. The scumbag is controlling them and manipulating them into doing what they want.
The meaning is obvious. Josh Homme feels like scumbag. He is using his art to attract young and inocent female fans. He knows how to do it, but his victims are powerless and then left in the cold. Apparently he feels guilty.
I think this song is about artists that exploit naive, impressionable people with work that glorifies and exaggerates their own pessimism. Under a guise of wisdom trusting fans alter their perspective so that eventually their personality, rather than seek-out things to relate to, adapts to the music/lyrics (in this case).
...And so the spider catches the fly.
I think it's written from the point of view of someone who uses other people. They appear to be selfless and tailored to the person they're trying to 'ensnare', but it's an act to get what they want.

They're just playing people because they're so egotistical they only value themselves and their own feelings, whilst their 'victim' is left in despair once they realise they've been played.

I don't know, maybe i'm way off, awesome song anyway.

Like other songs on this album, I love the light/shade in this song. The chorus sounds so evil when it kicks in, and the verses sound sleazy in comparison. Fits the lyrics perfectly.
Josh Homme - "This song is about too much of a good time".
