Uncle Bobby Lyrics

Knowledge came and devastated
Pressure building behind her eyes
Breathing buried under the weight
Will she, has she died also this day

Her death has been swallowed up by life
This dead will rise
Dying to death and raising to life

The moment we became alive death was waiting, chasing
And all of us fell and kept breathing
One day, today
A sprit’s alive, a body has died

And death has been swallowed up by life
This death will rise
Dying to death and raising to life
With mournful joy she finally lets out her cry
Death has been swallowed life
This dead will rise

In the middle of
All the business
A call to be still
Multitude of words
Quiet be still

And death has been swallowed up by life
This death will rise
Dying to death and raising to life
With mournful joy she finally lets out her cry
Death has been swallowed life
This dead will rise
Oh rise, oh rise
Rise, oh rise

This song is DEFINATELY my favorite song of Memento Mori. In my perspective, I think it's about the resurection of someone.

"Dying to death, and raising to life." Im PRETTY sure that pertains to dying and being risen up.

the song also says: "A spirit's alive, a body has died." Pretty self-explanitory. When your body dies, your spirit becomes alive.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44: "So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it is raised up in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised up in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised up in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised up a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual one."

I interpret it as kind of a two part song. One part reminds me of the history in the garden when satan/death was tempting Eve, and then came the fall of mankind but we kept breathing even though our spirits died. And then Christ who is Life, died and swallowed up death giving us the ability to spiritually rise from the dead.

And then the other part of interpretation I think we all can relate to is our own personal encounter with Christ. If you've ever seen the Lifehouse Skit on Youtube it kind of sums it up perfectly. The weight of the world and sin weighs us down and leaves us empty or longing for death. But then God raises us back to life and frees us from death.

I absolutely love this song, I get goosebumps everytime.

I could be totally off my rocker here, but I think it might be about someone who has found out they're dying, but is renewed by the knowledge and chooses to live positively rather than mope around.

"Knowledge came and devastated Pressure building behind her eyes Breathing buried under the weight Will she, has she died also this day"

I think this is where the person finds out they have some terminal illness (brain cancer? that would be "behind her eyes"...).

"Her death has been swallowed up by life This dead will rise Dying to death and raising to life

The moment we became alive death was waiting, chasing And all of us fell and kept breathing One day, today A spirit's alive, a body has died"

"Her death has been swallowed up by life" means, to me, that she chooses to live it out, instead of being depressed about imminent death. She knows that she will die, but wants to live as best she can before then, and she believes that once she does die she'll be brought into the afterlife anyway.

Overall I think this song is about the human capacity to fall, and get back up again. It's a really beautiful song, anyway, no matter what it's about.

it's hard to tell if this is talking about someone physically dying or someone being born again (from a Christian's perspective). It's interesting to see the title of the song being "Uncle Bobby", and I'm starting to think this is Lacey's perspective on what happened. It could be that maybe her uncle (and im taking this literal) might've been born again, and then somehow he had died causing her to "With mournful joy she finally lets out her cry" but she rejoices because she know's that her uncle's physical body has died but his spirit has gone into Heaven "Death has been swallowed by life, this dead will rise. Oh rise, oh rise." It's a quite interesting story/lyrics, and I'm really loving the melody of the song. I didn't pay too much attention until I started reading the lyrics. I LOVE this song.

@miguelsolorio Lacey actually wrote a book and the guy who helped them to get a record deal was a guy named Bobby. He died in a car crash so his wife wanted the band to make a concert for Bobby's memorial. Lacey said that the guy who did the sound. she also said that they sounded like crap. When he was alive he helped them not sound like crap.

After hearing Lacey's testimony, I'm thinking, the title may come from the Preacher/Priest that 'saved her'. She said the Preacher's brother talked to her, and told her about God. If she wouldn't have heard him, she said she would have committed suicide. So, in short terms, "Uncle Bobby" may have been titled after the guy who talked to her, and [the song] could be about [Lacey] being reborn.

i think its bout someone close to her dying, it reminds me of my grandpa...i wanted to be alone after he died, to get away from everything and be still, like it says. but i know he's still alive even if his body isn't

i think its abviously about salvation, getting saved, ect. and dying to her flesh, the old sinner she was, and now being truely alive. and how she was spiritually dead before and her new life swalled up her heading toward deat and saved her. The moment we became alive death was waiting, chasing And all of us fell and kept breathing One day, today A sprit's alive, a body has died this is talkin about when you are saved the devil tries to steal you away from god, but they dont give up even when life gets hard and know god is the way. and dying to your flesh "bady has died spirits alive"

so that sums up what i think its about :)

My Interpretation

oh i gorgot to say that i agree with RememberMortality that the title could be lacey refering to the an that saved her :)

I think its about the death of a loved one, and coming to terms with loss. The main theme is is summed up by "A spirit's alive, though a body has died" meaning that death is the process of one's spirit being born into the afterlife, and that spirit is something we on Earth can still connect with through our faith. The rest of the song explores that dynamic in a very personal way. Thank you Flyleaf for a song of such incredible power and beauty.

My Interpretation

The song is about her uncle who murdered her cousin at age 3. Lacey was about ten years old when it happened. She became an atheist after her cousin died. The last verse is about her becoming born-again. Her testimony is up on youtube, check it out!!

'Knowledge came and devastated Pressure building behind her eyes Breathing buried under the weight Will she, has she died also this day'

I think this is talking about Eve. She ate the 'forbidden fruit' and gained all knowledge (in turn devastated the world). 'breathing buried under the weight' could mean the weight of the world (and all her new understanding) was on her shoulders.

'Her death has been swallowed up by life This dead will rise Dying to death and raising to life'

Eve's death has been swallowed up because Jesus Christ died for it. So even though she started sin and is the reason theres sin in the world today, Jesus died covering up the penalty. So the dead will rise. Even though we are dead, if we except Jesus into our hearts we become alive. In doing so we 'Die' to 'Death we are already in' and 'Raise' to 'Life with Christ'.

'The moment we became alive death was waiting, chasing And all of us fell and kept breathing One day, today A sprits alive, a body has died'

The moment we were born the devil was out to get us, chasing us. -All of us were born pure, but as we grew we learned sin (werent neccessarily taught), so we fell (spiritually) but (our flesh) kept breathing. Once you get saved, the flesh part of you dies (not physically but you stop living by the fleshes desires) and start living by the spirit of Jesus within you.

'In the middle of All the business A call to be still Multitude of words Quiet be still'

In the middle of a busy and sinful world, God calls us to be still and to listen. Psalm 46:10 - 'Be still, and know that I am God.' Multitude of words could be that theres so much going on around us, but He still wants us to listen to what He has to say.

Lol, so that was really really long, but that's my perspective on this song. i love it!! :) Flyleaf is such an amazing band and it's so awesome to see that they Glorify God though it all.
