In The Dark Lyrics

I've written songs
In the dark in the dark in the dark in the dark
I've felt inspired
In the dark in the dark in the dark in the dark
I hide myself
In the dark in the dark in the dark in the dark
Used to be afraid
Of the dark of the dark of the dark of the dark
Those in the light know we die
Of the dark of the dark of the dark of the dark

There's only artificial light here
My flaws hide well here
I used to be afraid of cluttered noises
Now I'm afraid of silence

Fill this space idle words
I'm scared to death of light and silence
Jesus kill me inside this
Raise me up to live again
Like you did, like you did
Like you did, like you did.

Now I am mute despite myself
All of them are gone
The silence overtakes me
The idle words forsake me and I am left to face me
I'm held accountable
For every idle word
Curse the idle words

I'm scared to death of light and silence
Jesus kill me inside this
Raise me up to live again
Like you did, like you did.

Glory shows up
Exposes us
I'm naked here
Forsaken here, by the dark, by the dark
Damn the dark!

I'm scared to death of light and silence
Jesus kill me in side this
Raise me up to live again
Like you did
Like you did.

I LOVE THIS SONG!

To me, this song is about someone hiding from the world (obviously expressed when she says "I hide myself (in the dark)") but it extends further than that, she is hiding from the truth and imperfections. In the silence, it is said, that the truth speaks loudest, hence she is afraid of silence, and tries to "fill this space" with "idle words", the noise hides fear.

"Now I'm mute, despite myself All of them are gone The silence overtakes me The idle words forsake me and I am left to face me"

This stanza suggests that the idle words were her way of hiding, running, and ultimately avoiding her truth, and so when she is mute, everything comes rushing in, like opening the flood gates, and she is "held accountable for every idle word"

"Glory shows up, exposes us I'm naked here, forsaken here By the dark, by the dark"

This stanza shows that she cannot truly hide, not even in the dark, at which point she begs Jesus to kill her, and grant her redemption in the form of resurrection (so she may walk the Earth again free from sin and guilt)

TL:DR; This song is about hiding from yourself, and ultimately finding that you can't really hide at all, that no matter what, everything will catch up to you.

I love it.

This is my opinion 'bout this song. In big lines,I think is about an artist,a genius, she writes songs in the dark, she feels inspiration in the dark, but she is also hiding herself there,in the place where once upon the time she couldnt stay for too long, cause it was frightening her. The "artificial light" that she speaks about is a...god,created by our hands, and idol, something to belive in,because we cannot accept Him(the true flawless purifing light),so she hides herself from him, because she is afraid of her sins,of her flaws. Well, the Christian doctrine says that the Hell is a red hot place filled with imps and..other kind of things like this.Well,I contradict this doctrine, because the hell is seen in different ways by every single person, because we all have different fears, persoanlly I see it like an endless sunless misty frostbitten tundra filled with beasts that could tear you apart. Why do I speak about things like Hell?Well she says she's afraid of silence, further in the song she says she's scared to death of light and silence, well the light,as I said early,I think is either God or the final judgement and because she isn't very sure about how pure she is...how innocent she is,she also prefers to be afraid of the silence, her version of..hell. Fill this space idle words... Jesus kill me inside this Raise me up to live again Like you did There,in that gloomy, obscure place, she didn't have any kind of belief,or something to fill the hole inside her spirit, her essence,so she prefered to deceive herself with idle words, until the moment she descoverd Jesus and she begged Him to break the shell she was living into,to relese her from that prison she was held like a captive, her body, and to be reborn like a phoenix:new, innocent, pure, like He once did. She was also aware of her bad side, otherwise she wouldn't have asked Him to "kill" her.All she ever wanted was God's forgiveness,to penance herself. Now I am mute despire myself All of them are gone The silence overtakes The idle words forsake and I am left to face me I'm helf accountable For every idle word Curse the idle word I think this passage is about how she imagines, the final judgement and how she sees herself banished in "silence",so I'm comming again to the doctrine, that says that when you stay before Him,He puts in ballance the good in you with the bad in you.Eventually, you are either sentenced to Eden or to Hell. "All of them are gone" - your friends, your family, those empty words,in front of Him you're all alone. For the last 4 lines...lets say you weren't too..religious and you said all kind of idle words about God,when you are in front of Him,those words forsake you,you no longer have the courage to admit them, finally, you are kept like an hostage,to see every single thing you've done til your fate is sealed forever. Glory shows up Exposes us I'm naked here Forsaken here,by the dark Damn the dark! This staza is about the end of the world, when the angels blow the bugle, when He comes on the earth and separate us in 2 "packs"...when the light suffocates even the darkest corner, exposing everyone of us,every sin,everything..when,your best friend who kept you safety from yourself til that moment leaves you,and you must face yourself your sins. Finally, you are either punished or rewarded for the way you lived you life

Hope you liked it

to me this song is about the conversion of a person...
I've written songs (in the dark) I've felt inspired (in the dark) I hide myself (in the dark) Used to be afraid (of the dark) ...could be an artist, or just a common person... Those in the light know we die (in the dark) here she regards to the christians. We know the people is dying in the darkness of this world, but most of the time we just stand aside and watch how the Enemy is destroying the lifes of even our beloved... There's only artificial light here there's only vanity in this world... My flaws hide well here in the darkness of this world our sins are not noticed because there's always somebody "worse" than me... I used to be afraid of cluttered noises Now I'm afraid of silence little kids get frightened when they hear a strong sound, but as we grow up we learn to live surrounded by noise. we are so accustomed to it that we are afraid to be alone with ourselves, and listen to our consciences... Fill this space, idle words when we are away from God, we trie to fill our emptyness with the vanity of this world... I'm scared to death of light and silence Jesus kill me inside this Raise me up to live again Like you did, like you did finally, she is face to face with the only person that can truly fill her, but she's affraid of the change. She ask Jesus to "kill" her and give her the NEW LIFE... Now I'm mute, despite myself All of them are gone The silence overtakes me The idle words forsake me and I am left to face me finally, she takes on her lonelyness. Now she knows that is essential for her forgiveness to look inside herself and see that she is a sinner, and she needs to be changed, to leave behind those "idle words" and the vanity of this world...
I'm held accountable for every idle word Curse the idle words like LBrennanvw said, this is a reference to Matthew 12:36. She is conscious of her sins, and she ask to be cleaned of them... Glory shows up, exposes us I'm naked here, forsaken here By the dark, by the dark Damn the dark she can feel the presence of God in her life...there's no way to escape, and she doesnt want to, because it's taking away all the darkness inside...

My Interpretation

I fully agree with you. The finding of faith and being baptised.

When I get baptised I'll get submerged to reinact death, to be raised, reborn to live like Jeshua (Yeshua vocally said in one of Flyleaf's other songs).

=3 Brilliant interpratation. (Sp?)

this song is definitely one of my top favorites from the album!!

Great interpretation. Jesus must kill the person they have become so that they may metaphorically begin a new and better life.

I'm so glad that you clarified this part for me---I was confused about it but now this makes perfect sense :)

It depends on how damn is used.
To pronounce an adverse judgment upon. To bring about the failure of; ruin. To condemn as harmful, illegal, or immoral. To condemn to everlasting punishment or a similar fate; doom. Used in this way it is not considered a "curse" word.

Damn is actually used in the bible a good bit but you see it more as Damned or Damnation.
