I don't think it's about the drug companies....

I think this song is about how society as a whole tends toward self-destructive attributes, but mainly how we are unaware of what we're doing to ourselves, and how certain people manipulate the populace.

seems to be about drug companies.. Qotsa's "better living through chemistry" is about how cynical the drug industry is.

Also, the last line is -

I love the alternate, line-by-line vocals of Josh and Dave in the pre-chorus. It's Queens and the Foo in perfect measure. Tasty.

Actually I think it's about discovering stuff he wish he hadn't discovered on psychedelic drugs. That's why he wants his mind erased and it also explains the lines about understanding is cruel and ignorance being bliss. This is also why he wants the fun police to leave him alone coz he's probs doing acid and he knows he's probably screwing his head up but he doesnt care hence "Give me the reason why the minds a terrible thing to waste?".

This song seems to be about drug abuse as a means of escapism. The idea of amnesia in a pill is the most obvious reference, but it hardly ends there. The most subtle is probably "Dulling the edge of a razor blade," in my mind, refers to the act of cutting up a drug into lines of powder to snort it. I can't really think of another action that one would willingly use a razor blade for that would cause it to significantly dull, outside of its intended use of course.

Although the meaning of the song is simple and easy to understand, they deliver it so beutifully and flawlessly. I don't think I can add anything new to what has been said by stating that the song describes the current human condition and follows up on the statement, "Ignorance is bliss" by saying that when you don't care about the truth, you have nothing and become a despot. of sorts. "Ignorance is bliss UNTIL they take your bliss away." and when that is gone then you have nothing to hold onto
