We Could Be Friends Lyrics

I am convinced
that we could be friends
We have several interests in common
In common

And I am convinced
that we have been friends
Were you a Tahitian
grain of sand
In a past life?

Please don't put your face into your hands
we could be friends
Please don't put your face into your hands
we could be friends

I am convinced
that we should be friends
We compare our hearts
to things that fly
But cannot land

Please don't put your face into your hands
we could be friends
Please don't put your face into your hands
we could be friends
Please don't put your face into your hands
we could be friends
Please don't put your fresh into your ways
we could be friends
Please don't put your face into your hands
we could be friends
I can count the ways on my two hands
We could be friends

it is so weird how i can hear this song a bunch of times and think it's subpar compared to others on the album.. and then one time it comes on, and i'm blown away. it happened with ghosting, too. this album just keeps getting more surprising as time goes on. i.. love. this song. this is beautiful.

this song sounds, to me, like he's speaking to someone that he has ended a relationship with. she's upset (please don't put your face into your hands) but he's trying to be sweet and wanting to start over. it just sounds like he's trying to be clever about it and skip the parable with things like 'we have many interests in common' and that's all it takes to be friends...but i don't think their can't be any context to this song because of the 'please don't put your face into your hands' line. i don't see why anyone would do that at such a suggestion unless there was history. (:

Can anyone translate what this lyric means:

"Were you a Tahitian grain of sand In a past life?"

I don't understand what these words are actually saying, thanks.

Translation

I probably might be completely far from what it actually means, but here's what I came up with...

I think it's pretty apparent that the person is fighting to prove one thing: that they could remain friends after whatever situation came upon them to get to this point. This entire song screams persuasion to me, consolation in a way (please don't put your face into your hands we could be friends, here are the reasons why... etc.)

So if we focus on these particular words: we COULD/HAVE/SHOULD be friends, it can kind of start to make sense.
