In These Arms Lyrics
use the truth as a weapon
to beat up all your friends
every chink in the armor
an excuse to cause offense
and the boys from the hallway calling out your name
and true love will find them in the end
you were restless
I was somewhere less secure
so I went running to the road
and so now there's a long list of places I was
I quit my rambling and came home
cause maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
use your saints and your mantra
and you things to keep you calm
if you stay with that asshole
he's gonna do you harm
there's a voice singing loudly on the radio just for you
that good fortune will find him in the end
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
to beat up all your friends
every chink in the armor
an excuse to cause offense
and the boys from the hallway calling out your name
and true love will find them in the end
I was somewhere less secure
so I went running to the road
and so now there's a long list of places I was

maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
and you things to keep you calm

that good fortune will find him in the end
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms
maybe I was born to hold you in these arms

When I heard that The Swell Season was coming out with their sophomoric album, I couldn't help but rush online to hear it! This song jumped out to me, it's very reminiscent of their debut album, and movie, Once. I see it as a very bittersweet romance, very typical of Glen Hansard to write about. A man is calloused and bitter, and yet remains hopeful through it all, for a future with his dream girl. He battles with saying insensitivity, jealousy, and insecurity all as attempts to get the attention of said girl, because all he wants... you guessed it... is to hold her in his arms. He is so patient and knows she'll end up with him, he harbors no resentment for the other people that come and go in her life, because in his heart of hearts, he knows his only soft spot is for her. I love it!
playing for last.fm Glen described this song in terms of how in every situation there is a knowledge that things are going to work out -- in your life you may have to wait a long time, but things come around again. Maybe you have to let somebody go, but also with the knowledge that life has to be lived, and that maybe next time around there will be something between you.
This would have been such a beautiful song. Then Glen had to ruin it with "a*hle."
Seriously; there are few words so graphically distasteful as to ruin an otherwise wonderful song in one fell swoop. That's one of them.
I'm not trying to pick a fight, but the swearing is part of the raw emotion of this song that I love.

"Asshole" isn't graphically distasteful, but it is graphically artistic; it gives a clear and effective picture of the person he's talking about. But it/Glen still leaves it vague enough so that everyone can relate to.
