Shooting The Moon

Well, there was always that conspiracy that American space exploration was a hoax and that no one ever stepped on the moon. That could possibly be what this song is about, when it mentions astronauts and other important figures waiting for the "big hero" to come, but he's afraid because he doesn't know how to break the truth to everyone. And he says for everyone to not let his news get them down and for them to keep soldiering on and shooting for the moon (i.e. keep trying to actually make it to the moon for real). But that's just an idea...

I think they're singing about letting people down, but it's because their expectations were too high. He's saying "well sorry I couldn't do it, but good luck if you want to try.". Shooting the moon means aiming really high for something thats next to impossible and hard to do in my opinion, that's where the "good luck if you want to try" comes in.

Great song! And it was a good song for New Moon. I could sing this all day!

Love this song, although I'm not quiet sure about the meaning. I guess it might be about lying to people, pretending. I'm still not quiet sure what "shooting the moon" stands for.

"Shooting the moon" or rather to "shoot the moon" is also a Hearts card game reference. You "shoot the moon" when you collect all the point scoring cards in a hand (the goal of the game, if you're unfamiliar, is to accrue the lowest amount of points) resulting in all other players getting penalized with the points you would have otherwise accrued.

It's one of the more difficult strategies to pull off since there are 14 point scoring cards and only 13 rounds of play per hand. If you're missing even 1 of the point scoring cards, you're pretty much up the creek.

in most things we've all been lied to by those we trusted...and sometimes they act like it's ok..no big deal..(solider on with it). you want someone who you can totally trust?..good luck! (they are out there i might add)

I believe this song is talking about those who let others down. People who cannot/do not live up to their expectations, or in other words, failing to "shoot the moon".

in my opinion, it's like he tried to save her, but it was impossible, he tried to shoot for the moon.

for me, when i listen this song, it always give me the impression of he is try to calm down the girl, and take the things easy, when she is not. he probably must say anything rude to her but not in a badly way and she taked the thing in a badly way. ''shooting the moon'' always make me view a girl frustrated and she feels like have to shoot something, and she is shooting the moon 'cause it's one thing that she cannot touch or is not present in the real life. she is frustrated with almost no reason, and she wanna shoot the moon. he is saying to her to calm down. it's the impression/sensation that i have when i listen to this. the drums in the beggining oooh i love...... gives me the feeling of its all about a condemnation, like if it's all about she think is doomed.

To "shoot the moon" or "shoot for the moon" is to go for broke, to put all your efforts into doing something, so that if you fail it is not for lack of trying. As someone mentioned about Hearts - when you shoot the moon it is all or nothing. You either take all the point cards & win big, or you take almost all the point cards & lose big. Maybe in this context it means "good luck with going all out & doing your best - it won't be enough".
