Chasing Pirates Lyrics

In your message you said, you were goin' to bed,
But I'm not done with the night.
So I stayed up and read, but your words in my head,
Got me mixed up so I turned out the light.

And I, don't know how, to slow it down.
My mind's racing from chasing pirates.

Now an ambulance screams while the silliest things are
Floppin' around in my brain.
And I try not to dream up impossible schemes,
that swim around, wanna drown me insane.

And I, don't know how, to slow it down.
Oh my mind's racing from chasing pirates.

And I, don't know how, to slow it down.
Oh my mind's racing from chasing pirates.

My mind's racin' from chasing pirates.
My mind's racin' from chasing pirates.

This whole album is different from her other work. But...by George I think I like it. I really dig Norahs voice and I this change shows that she doesn't just want to be that jazzy crooner. I like this chill new sound. And the album art is precious

You guy know what chasing pirates is.

It's that feeling when your body is weary and you're so tired your eyes are watering but you can't close them becUse your mind is so busy. It's not a great feeling but you wake up the next day like you figured something out.

It's a great song, very easy to listen to. No idea what she's on about though.

I hate to go with the obvious.. but I feel like it COULD POSSIBLY be about her texting or talking to her boyfriend, or a guy that she is interested in, at night then he starts to end the conversation and says he's "goin' to bed" but she wants to keep talking to him. She lets him go and goes about her business till her mind takes over. She's thinking, "Now what the hell is that boy/man up to??", from the most innocent things as in getting into trouble with his friends, or the worst which is him with another woman. She doesn't want to think of such things but her brain just won't switch off. I know the feeling.

I love this song! I've listened to it over & over again trying to figure out what she is talking about but my mind seems to wonder about my boyfriend & what he's doing. Then I realized that's what's Norah is talking about! I think she's talking about her mind wondering because that is what us women do! So this is how or why my interpretation is what it is.... The song starts out talking about "him" saying he left her a message stating he's going to bed. Then she don't feel like going to bed so she tries to read a book & can't seem to stop thinking about his message. (She don't believe he went to bed) Her mind wonders even more after turning off the lights. The chasing pirates is a metaphor meaning that the pirates are those that chase after a treasure. Like herself, a woman chasing after a dream of someone she thinks is her true love. The song is short and she repeats the words chasing pirates because its her mind wondering off and thinking more thoughts about what he's really doing but in reality they're only thoughts. Great job again Norah! I love this song!

I must be in the minority here, but I like this song better than her previous work... oh well, you can't please everyone.

it's light airy and perfectly pleasant. one of those songs that takes your mind off your problems for the amount of time that it's on and maybe just a little more. the lyrics don't mean much. chasing pirates is a metaphor for sleep i'm thinking.

probably one of my favorite songs by her. it's more upbeat than her others adn i like it.

AHHHHHHH!! This is one of my favourite songs and someone stuffs up the lyrics. "The man in there swings" is wrong. "Now an ambulance screams" is right. I know someone up further said they couldn't be bothered changing it, but I sure can. Anyway, I have OCD so the way I interpreted the song was she can't stop thinking, her thoughts are of her control (which I understand perfectly). They lead her to places she doesn't want to go and the pirates probably refer to her feeling of helplessness in the matter, having her control stolen and trying to catch an uncatchable enemy???? Meh, I like the song, so who really cares what I think?

My Interpretation

Apart from the obvious (she's singing about a guy who called it a night when they were texting/messaging), I think by "chasing pirates", she is referring to the guy as a pirate. By pirate, she may mean that the guy is after someone other than her; he may be chasing gold diggers, hence "pirate". So she's chasing someone who is chasing someone else
