Ludlow St. Lyrics
Everything seems to go wrong when I stop drinking.
Everything seemed to go my way last night.
Everything seems so wrong to me this morning.
I know things will be brighter later tonight.
On Ludlow St.
Chinatown's coming on Ludlow St.
Puerto Rican's are runnin' on Ludlow St.
Soon, musicians will haunt it on Ludlow St.
Where Indians once hunted.
And it's hard.
Just move along.
While I surrendered my ego you fed yours.
All my fantasies died when you said yours.
I have dangled my pride to forget yours,
Will my mind be at ease when you get yours?
We'll find out soon enough.
It started back in 1624.
The Lenape tribes would soon get forced from their home.
Soon we'll all get pushed out as soon as I get sober.
I remember why I drank it all away.
On Ludlow St.
Nauseous regrets are calling me on the phone
My shoes, they seem to be my only home.
The only thing to last will be my bones.
Oh, tonight you'll hear the animals next door to you moan.
On Ludlow St.
Faces are changing on Ludlow St.
Yuppies invading on Ludlow St.
Night life is raging on Ludlow St.
History's fading.
And it's hard... to just move along.
While I surrendered my ego, you fed yours.
All my fantasies died when you said yours.
I have dangled my pride to forget yours.
Will my mind be at ease when you get yours?
We'll find out soon enough.
While they defended their ego, you fed yours.
All their fantasies died when you said yours.
They have dangled their pride to forget yours.
Will their souls be at ease when you get yours?
We'll find out soon enough.

Suprised nobody else has commented yet, great song.
my favourite bit is: While I surrendered my ego you fed yours...
Obviously a song about New York, and probably the "universal culture" that is culminating as cities become more and more generic with no distinguishable identity. Gentrification, white flight, urban sprawl, urban decay, yuppies, pushing out middle and lower class people who have lived there for generations (even addressing the original victims: the Indians), suburban development, decentralizing cities rendering them un-walkable, watering down the culture, erasing the past, tearing down historic buildings to built condos, etc etc etc etc.
I'm from Philly, but I do understand the problems facing New York and so many other cities. My mother and all her family are native New Yorkers and tell me how it's completely changed. Quite sad. I know there are more layers here, but this is easy to start with. :)
well put... I live in New York for most of my life and I've seen it change too.. It used to be waaaay more united, and people would talk to eachother much more..

anyway, there's also the "love" undertone to this song as well, I think.. Maybe not... I guess it really depends on how you interpret the "Ego" lines.

reading every bodys thoughts on this reminds me very much of a movie called, "i like killing flies". .. random i know, but if you were to ever watch it you'd understand my point.
I see the gentrification reference. :b Overall good song. :)
Gonna agree with HertogHJ, worst song on the album (unless you're counting the ....christmas... one)
What's with that solo? Why?
Otherwise, tolerable.
Hey guys. I wrote a detailed analysis of this song on my site, more than I could easily summarize here:

Let me know what you think!
While I surrendered my ego you fed yours All my fantasies died when you said yours I have dangled my pride to forget yours Will my mind be at ease when you get yours? We'll find out soon enough...
Hanging out with narcissists. Either one of his parents probably was one.
@hou5ekeeping thanks for clarifying! I thought he was singing about us fans and I got real self conscious lol

This is one of the first songs I heard off this album and I had the feeling of, “Damn, this guy…this guy…this guy. This guy just gets it.” And I now know he never did; but it’s sure darn nice to think about. Especially if you’ve got a family member who’s struggled with alcohol addiction in the past and present.
Worst song of the album for me. Good chorus though.
