i told you that you would put on some weight,
you went out with somebody named kevin green,
you preferred to go to a volleyball game,
i told you that you couldn't be more lame

no way, we ain't gonna break up
we made a promise and our will won't fade out
not just in '08 and '09
we'll be together from now until the end of time
you've got the Shirley Applebee look
i'm totally caught up on your hook
you know that we are gonna be ok
we'll stick together as we're tripping down the freeway

you withheld the physical love i need
i said, "hey, that i'm gonna play the field"
you broke down and told me you loved me true
i said, "girl, i gotta be with you"

no way, we ain't gonna break up
we made a promise and our will won't fade out
not just in '09 and '10
we'll be together from now until the very end
you've got the Shirley Applebee look
i'm totally caught up on your hook
you know that we are gonna be ok
we'll stick together as we're tripping down the freeway

no way, we ain't gonna break up
we made a promise and our will won't fade out
not just in oh-ten and oh-eleven
we'll be together from now until we're up in heaven
you've got the Shirley Applebee look
i'm totally caught up on your hook
you know that we are gonna be ok
we'll stick together as we're tripping down the freeway

tripping down the freeway!
tripping down the freeway!
tripping down the freeway!
tripping down the freeway!

Cute song, and pretty inspirational(well, to me). It makes me want to give my relationship another chance, unbeknownst, though, to my boyfriend that I was giving up in the first place :b

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
