Slow Life Lyrics
I think I know what's on your mind
A couple words, a great divide
Waiting in the wings, a small respite
Crowding up the foreground from behind
Even though you're the only one I see
It's the last catastrophe
Place your bets on chance and apathy
Take anything you want, it's fine
Keep up the slow life for the night
Don't take it back, I'll just deny
This constant noise all the time
Even though you're the only one I see
It's the last catastrophe
Place your bets on chance and apathy
From the wind in front of me
Even though you're the only I see
It's the last catastrophe
Place your bets on chance and apathy
From the wind in front of me
Even though you're the only I see
A couple words, a great divide
Waiting in the wings, a small respite
Crowding up the foreground from behind
It's the last catastrophe
Place your bets on chance and apathy
Keep up the slow life for the night
Don't take it back, I'll just deny
This constant noise all the time
It's the last catastrophe
Place your bets on chance and apathy
From the wind in front of me
It's the last catastrophe
Place your bets on chance and apathy
From the wind in front of me

I feel this song is about a break up, perhaps a break where both love each other but it just wasn't meant to be so it's not possible to make it work. There was no betrayal from either side of any kind (other than like growing apart), it's just one of those situations that you can't control. 'Place your bets on chance and apathy From the wind in front of me'
You still love each other, hence 'Even though you're the only one I see'
You know the kind of environment where there's just arguments, and distance but you can't define why ..
Because you love the other so much still you don't want to shout 'I'm taking the dog, or half this house is mine' you just want peace for the night, no more arguing, it's not worth it (slow life).. it's all been said and done. You won't patronise them by accepting their ownership of blame or take responsibility for it yourself either, because you've both realised there's no point in denying you've decided to give up, you don't want to listen to the noise anymore.. the arguments..
Take anything you want, it's fine Keep up the slow life for the night Don't take it back, I'll just deny This constant noise all the time
They've decided it's time to say goodbye 'It's the last catastrophe' (by the way, that's what I hear).
While I find the lyrics very sad, the music itself makes you want to remember the good before it's too late.
It's bittersweet, as is most things with twilight. I love this song.
** an after thought:
'take anything you want, it's fine Keep up the slow life for the night' could mean - i love you so much, take anything you want, whatever makes you happy. I won't try to stop you, I'll put my brave face on & keep the peace tonight.
'don't take it back, i'll just deny this constant noise all the time' could also mean you don't want the other to have any any regrets of what they once had because you're able to put aside all the 'noise' & 'arguing'.. pretend it didn't exist or deny it because you did have love once.
I think I know what's on your mind,
a couple words, a great divide.
Waiting in the wings, a sparring spite,
crawling out the foreground from behind.

Even though you're the only one I see,
 it's the last catastrophe.
Place your bets on chance and apathy.

Even though you're the only one I see . . .
(if you think that's wrong then your wrong, it's this thing on itunes (lyrica) says are the lyrics... and it sounds right.)
this is exactly right.

Ok, this is my first submission to SongMeanings, even though I've been a lurker for awhile now. This song is from the New Moon soundtrack (for those of you who don't know, part of the mega-force franchise that is Twilight), which means a lot of people hating because of the throngs of crazy hormonal fan girls, haha.
But, I love me some Grizzly Bear, and the whole album is comprised of great indie artists. Anyhoo, I took a stab at this one because I love love love this song (which features Victoria LeGrand of the group Beach Houses). I sat here and listened to this song over and over and couldn't grasp some of the lyrics, so I went online to find them...and there was pretty much nothing.
So feel free to correct...my motivation was to figure out what the hell Ed Droste is saying in the chorus. I like to be able to sing along confidently to the songs I like alot :)
I think it's "place your bets on chance and apathy" and "this constant noise all the time."

I'm pretty sure "from the wind in front of me" isn't right, but I can't figure out what he IS saying. I'm about to burst my eardrums from pressing my ear buds into my ears trying to hear what he's saying.

Good job on these lyrics. I did it from scratch and came up with the same thing. The only difference is the "wind in front of me" part. Idk. It's sounds to me like "till the wind is far at sea". Almost. It's the best I can do.

OK. I changed my mind about the "chance and apathy" line. I now think it's "chance and I'll believe." Maybe this context clue will help one of us to figure out that last line!

Hey, I'd just like to say this is pretty much the best guess at the words I've seen so far. But I have to agree that "From the wind in front of me" is very obscure. Just to put my two cents worth in, I think he might be saying "Tell me when this world is free." But I could be totally wrong. At this point its anybody's guess.
I just wanted to tell you that I freaking LOVE your username. favorite character EVER. and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and infinity.

@evenstarundomiel You provided probably the best words to that line. Thanks for your contribution ;)

Kristenn,
pretty sure your lyrics are the most wrong i have ever seen. They don't even match the vowel sounds of what the singers are singing.
The lyrics that have been posted are completely correct, with the only possible mistake being 'from the wind in front of me'.
I agree w/ you. I think the lyrics posted are the closest. Not what Kristenn has. Any thoughts on "from the wind in front of me?"

LOVE this track. Its dark and dreamy at the same time. Totally beautiful.
Fuck twilight
HAHAHAHAHAHA

My interpretation:
"I think I know what's on your mind A couple words, a great divide " (You dont want to do this, you're going to say a few words that will push me away)
"Even though you're the only one I see It's the last catastrophe Place your bets on chance and apathy" (I love you but this is the last time I can take a chance on love. This person has been hurt in the past.)
"Take anything you want, it's fine Keep up the slow life for the night" (Ill give you anything if we can have one more night together)
This person is in love and is willing to make one final chance at love with someone but this person is a bit worried that the person they love will slip away.
I thought it was:
"Even though you're the only one I see, this is the last you'll catch of me"
I think that that is completely wrong though. I'm really unsure of what Ed is singing during the chorus. but it's such a beautiful vocal/song that I don't care. :)
Fits in perfectly with the scene in the film too.
The lyrics the website posted is right, exactly right. you all might want to relisten to the song
