Night Watch Lyrics

I've got grounds for divorce
It's in my blood, this divorce
I separate everybody
I need distance from your body
Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house

So get away
you cannot follow me
(I get away)
You cannot follow me
So get away
you cannot follow me
So get away
You cannot follow me
(I get away)

I've got grounds for recourse
Your lungs fill with discourse
You separate from my body
You need consistence from somebody
Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house

So get away
you cannot follow me
(I get away)
You cannot follow me
So get away
you cannot follow me
(I get away)
You cannot follow me
So get away
you cannot follow me
(I get away)
You cannot follow me
(So get away)

I LOVE this song!

I think it's not necessarily about her divorce from a partner or about her parent's divorce (ie the song is in their opinion).

For me, this song is about someone who has commitment issues. (I've got grounds for divorce, It's in my blood, this divorce) Is about how she feels like she can't help causing break ups in relationships because she has commitment issues, she needs time to herself and because her parents divorced when she was young. The singer can't help needing distance from people, it's just part of who she is.

(I'll separate everybody, I need distance from your body) She is saying that she has to get away from people, not just lovers, but everyone, she needs time away from everyone to be with herself

(Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house) This line is saying that her partner is angry with her for always needing distance and the singer is annoyed with herself for needing to keep away from people and thinks that her partner deserves to be annoyed with her

(So get away, you cannot follow me) Obvious really, she just has to get away from others and from her partner and there's nothing anyone can do about it, no matter how much the singer loves someone, she needs to get away

(I've got grounds for recourse) She's saying there is a chance that she can fix this aspect of her personality because (Your lungs fill with discourse) her partner is feeling divided between staying with her or just getting out of the relationship, and she doesn't want her partner to leave.

(You separate from my body, You need consistence from somebody) Her partner is drifting away from her because the singer is too distant from her whereas her partner needs someone who is consistent and this is why the singer wants to change, again because she doesn't want her partner to leave

(Oh, I deserve this anguish on my house) Her partner is hurt by the singer and is giving her grief for being so distant and the singer thinks she deserves this anguish because it is her who is hurting her partner, it is her who is breaking up their relationship.

So yeah, I think it's about someone who needs distance from people, no matter how much they love them and this quality is breaking up a relationship and hurting their partner, who is slowly moving away and debating whether or not to stay

My Interpretation

I guess this is about a song of courtship or wooing and of seduction. Hard-hearted (Sara doesn't care if she is stubborn) don't worry, I'm ready for a fight (ready to fight for her love) (sara's confident that she's gonna win her anyway so she's telling her to)Unnerved, the nerve, you're nervous, nervous that I'm right (and so she's right, the courtship is done thus a relationship began like telling her i told you so ) Now you know you know it now

oops wrong post lol - this supposed to be for Sentimental tune...sorry :S

Is it just me or does the chorus sound sting and the police esque? Just the way she sings it i dunno just a thought! :)

wow, i thought i was weird for thinking this. not to generalize, but maybe i just thought tegan and sara fans probably don't listen to the police so much.

i agree completely, abigay. and i like it.

So get away... i get away... thats what the book says

Hooray! Our first instincts were correct.

I think it makes more sense, too. "So get away. You cannot follow me."

..anyone else disappointed about that? my sister and I are xD we both feel like she says it really oddly

Yes and no. I'm happy my first instinct was correct, but I also did like "can/can't do it." However, I must admit that I never really heard a "t" at the end of the line. It almost sounded like, "So gen do-weh." xD

I think this song is about commitment issues. and how she wont let anyone get close to her because she doesn't want to end up like her divorced parents.

I think you've got it. :)

I hear: "So can't do it, do not follow me"

Yeah, that's what i heard too at first.. but it's not the right lyrics.

she's definitely saying "can not." I've listened to this a dozen times; it's hard to hear her say "you," it's kind of subdued in the way it's said, but I know for sure it's "cannot," not "do not."

also, I kind of think that even the words in parenthesis are also "I can't do it" and "so can't do it", rather than "so can do it" and "I can do it"

I can't tell, but since Sara is saying "YOU cannot follow me," meaning she's talking to someone, I interpreted it as "can" because "I" implies that someone is responding.

the very last line definitely sounds like "so can do it" to me, but with songs it's hard to tell on those sorts of things.

so get away

ill get away

I almost changed it, listened to it, thought "Maybe that's it." Then I listened again, and if that's what they're saying, they're saying it in a weird enough way to sound exactly what I wrote.

if someone sees the lyrics pamphlet, and it says that, I'll change it.

I thought it was 'so get away...i'll get away' too! Someone must have the lyric book by now? x x x

We'll just have to wait for someone with the booklet to see if these lyrics are correct. I actually, also, thought it was "get away" instead of "can do it." x}

and while i'm here... i read sara wrote it about their parents, but would anyone perhaps like to discuss their feelings about the meaning of the song? maybe delve a bit deeper into it?

after viewing some of the new album lyrics, it's strange to see how few people buy cds anymore these days... as the lyrics are right in the booklet.

i bought the cd. i wouldn't even allow myself to listen to it before the actual release date. i think the wait makes whatever's be waited for more appreciated. if you want to know this truth, though... i prefer when a cd doesn't come with the lyrics. i haven't even looked at them. i like to interpret them myself. there's more to discover that way. anyway, here's what i hear:

i’ve got grounds for divorce it’s in my blood this divorce i separate everybody i need distance from your body oh, i deserve this anguish on my house

so get away, you cannot follow me i get away, you cannot follow me so get away, you cannot follow me so get away, you cannot follow me i get away

i’ve got grounds for divorce your lungs fill with discourse you separate from my body you need consistence from somebody oh, i deserve this anguish on my house

so get away, you cannot follow me i get away, you cannot follow me so get away, you cannot follow me i get away, you cannot follow me so get away, you cannot follow me i get away, you cannot follow me so get away
