Nowhere Lullaby Lyrics

well the stakes of the game seemed fine
till you lost after all this time
has to make you cry
but you don't and you don't know why

trying not to solve this
doesn't mean it's not that bad

and everyone gets through the night
and everyone wakes up all right
and the fear you feel will pass
then a calmness that will last
we will learn to drift off fast

another nowhere lullaby
you can rest or you can try
and this waste it shines in every way [x2]

you make me laugh every single day
and you hardly make me cry
made fifteen years fly by
still here and I don't know why

has it been that long
where's the time and the table gone

hope it's longer than that now
don't forget we don't know how
and every one gets feeling down
but everybody understands
we're all doing what we can

I think this song kind of describes nothingness. Nothing lasts, feelings, good or bad. Everything comes in waves, comes and goes. Existence in itself comes and goes.

Lovely.

With the fifteen years part, maybe he's talking about his wife, but he's definitely referring to the amount of time he's been with Built To Spill. I saw Built To Spill a couple nights ago and I loved the show. They played a lot of their new stuff. It was the end of their tour I think. Doug is a really humble man. What's interesting about a lot of Martsch's songs is that most of them are about life in general. For instance, this song talks about everything being better in the morning, not knowing what to do with your life (4th stanza when his says, "You can rest or you can try" as if to say you can waste your life or you can do something with it.) "trying not to solve this" must be trying not to solve the mystery of life, just living life is enough. A lot of his songs have a message like that. An example of this is the song "Car". The simple take on life that Doug has is definitely a motif in his songs.

To understand what BTS lyrics often "point to", often it helps to think about things from a "non-dual" perspective and/or see words as describing, what I feel, is probably the writers' own journey into that realization. Yes, life in general and DEEPLY so, as well as very impersonally so.....a BEAUTIFUL thing.

It's about life when it's unmuddled by religious fantasies. Such a beautiful song.
