Alligator Lyrics

sensitive
it's true,
alligator tears cried over you
over you, over you
over you, over you

run around on me
I'd sooner die without
run around on me
die without

relentless,
yes, it's true
my motor mouth
runs over you
over you, over you
over you, over you

run around on me
I'd sooner die without
run around on me
die without

over you, over you
over you, over you
over you, over you
over you, over you

run around on me
I'd sooner die without
run around on me
die without

no hissy fits, mind my manners
won't make a scene
oh, over you

over you, over you
over you
over you, over you

run around on me
I'd sooner die without
run around on me
die without

rattled, yes, it's true
alligator tears spilled over you

run around on me
I'd sooner die without
run around on me
die without
run around on me
I'd sooner die without
run around on me
die without

over you, over you
over you
over you, over you
over you, over you
over you
over you, over you
over you
over you, over you
over you, over you

onto the meaning..

it's about "making a scene" and being over-emotional and dramatic in your relationship. she's crying fake tears (alligator tears) basically for attention and to make the other person feel guilty, even though she may not really want to do that. she talks about her "motor mouth" running over the other person, in that she's hurting her with her words. she's being obsessive and clinging to the other person as tightly as she can. she's worried that this other person might "run around on" her (maybe she already has?), and saying that she'd die without her. she's struggling against having these reactions (in the "no hissy fits" line), but she feels out of control and overrun by her feelings.

I can definitely relate to this, I'm crazy in relationships haha

I agree with TheWrongGirl, plus she was just saying that she THINKS about her whenever she sings it...because she made a connection between her writing that song and what that girls mom told her. It's not ABOUT her.

She did just get out of her marriage, so maybe she wrote the song about that? In an interview, Tegan said that "The Con" was when they were both going through break-ups so it was about that. Now "Sainthood", Tegan is in a new relationship so her songs are all upbeat and optimistic but Sara's songs are..full of anxiety, or something like that. Like she's still getting over her.

ANYWAY, so maybe this song is about her ex? I don't know why her relationship ended, maybe it was infidelity? Who knows! I really like it, though. :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0HUzsi8E8s she explains why she broke up with her in this video. I think its in the middle somewhere

Ohhh, thanks!

oh! over you, over you oh you over you, over you over you, over you over you, over you oh you over you, over you oh you over you, over you

I'm not sure about all the over you parts. I'm pretty sure most of the time she's saying over you, because in the clip of Tegan singing from it on Jordansilver.com she says it as "over you". But I think in some particular parts she's definitely saying "Oh you." I changed "cry" to "cried" and "spill" to "spilled". Minor corrections, but important just the same. Oh, and replaced "mind over mouth" with "my motor mouth". The last part, where you put "wild", I've got no clue. It sounds like "rotten" to me, but that doesn't exactly seem right. I've listened to this song a thousand times, and this is what I've gotten from it. Kudos on getting the "hissy fits, mind my manners" part, that one has been stumping me for days. Thanks for putting these lyrics up here! Can't wait for Sainthood to drop so we can all be sure!

well rotten does sound closer than wild so I'll leave that =P and I'm definitely stumped over the over vs oh situation, I wish that she'd made it clearer when she performed it xD but as soon as the cd is out that'll definitely be cleared up

there's a LOT of "I'd" that you added that's not actually there.

note: original posted lyrics for alligator, the cure, the ocean, on directing, red belt, and hell were based on the rifflandia performances on youtube. in that recording, there were many more "I'ds" than on the cd ;)

Do you guys think it could be "rattled" and not "rotten"??

I have just listened to the track on the album, and it does sound very much like rattled.

Sounds like rattled to me. Rattled would fit more with the lyrics.

yeah, rotten was just kind of what we threw in from the rifflandia recording because it was so unclear xD

I know the dance to the song from the music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30J1OiVly9c

I've always thought this song is about unrequited love.

'run around on me I'd sooner die without run around on me die without'

I think this means that even though the girl treats her badly ('runs around' on her), she'd 'sooner die' than go without her, or at least go without having this person in her life however painful it might be for her feelings to not be reciprocated.

'relentless, yes, it's true my motor mouth runs over you'

She's crazy about this girl and talks about her endlessly. There's this mess of emotions going on, the love for this person but also the bitterness towards them.

'no hissy fits, mind my manners won't make a scene oh, over you'

Her fear of losing this girl means she'd rather just bite her tongue and conceal her feelings than risk compromising their existing relationship. Or maybe she's angry at the girl being insensitive/ignorant towards her feelings, but again she'd rather not 'make a scene'. Maybe there's a third girl in the picture and it's a love triangle?

Whatever the case, it's is definitely about feeling bitter and heartbroken. This relationship is all about pure drama and over-exaggerated, perhaps even histrionic emotions (hence 'alligator' tears). The cheating explanation would make sense too, but I related this song to my own experience of unrequited love- the frustration of trying to convey your feelings but also constantly hold them back, and hold back your hurt/anger when the person takes them for granted in some way.

I think the song is indeed about making a scene and being dramatic while actually not wanting to do that.

I think it's about feeling upset about somebody who "runned around on her." This might have been somebody who "cheated" or someone who is ignoring her.

To me it seems that she felt the relationship or thing was more important and essential to her ( die without) and that the other person should not have runned around on her, but still it was not that serious that it feels justified to be so upset. no hissy fits, mind my manners I won't make a scene

But she still is very upset, so she has to deal with that and also with the fact that she is being dramatic and sensitive.

The song is a way to deal with being upset and this person treating her badly and a way to get " over you ' (it are alligator tears and the last parts of over you's)

I apologize that these aren't perfected yet, I'm just going from the Rifflandia concert recordings on YouTube, but I think they're close at least! Any input at all is very much appreciated as I'm not 100% on any of the lyrics yet, but we can work on them until the CD comes out =)

I think it's "over you," not "oh you." I can't be too certain, though. It sounds like both. xD

eek, I'm so excited I think I actually figured out the pattern of over yous and oh yous! =D I hope it's right. it sounds right!

Cover art for Alligator lyrics by Tegan and Sara

I don't think it's "over you, oh you". I'm pretty sure it's "over you, over you". Tegan sings the chorus in this video, and you can clearly tell:

:)

ive seen them live and tegan just does harmony in the chorus.
