Utopia Lyrics
The burning desire to live and roam free
It shines in the dark and it grows within me
You're holding my hand but you don't understand
So where I am going you won't be in the end
I'm dreaming in colors of getting the chance
I'm dreaming of china the perfect romance
The search of the door to open your mind
The search of the cure of mankind
Help us, we're drowning
So closed up inside
Why does it rain, rain, rain down on utopia?
Why does it have to kill the ideal of who we are?
Why does it rain, rain, rain down on utopia?
How will the lights die down, telling us who we are?
I'm searching for answers not given for free
They live inside as they lie within me
You hold my hand but you don't understand
Taking the road all alone in the end
I'm dreaming in colors, no boundaries again
Dreaming the dream we all seem to share
The search of the door to open your mind
The search of the cure of mankind
Help us, we're drowning
So closed up inside
Why does it rain, rain, rain down on utopia?
Why does it have to kill the ideal of who we are?
Why does it rain, rain, rain down on utopia?
How will the lights die down, telling us who we are?
Why does it rain, rain, rain down on utopia?
Why does it have to kill the ideal of who we are?

I totally agree with Madvil and AngelsSorrow, and I can add that.. the man on the video is like "God" or an "Angel", who comes to earth and sees all the bad things we have created, and the tears fall from his eyes; but he is trying to "tell" us that we should do something now, otherways the world would become a worst place. Other idea that came through my mind was that the persons that watch the crimes almost never do something (like the man on the video) because they are afraid, and at last it shows that doing something good, although is very little, it is still helpful; but if everyone does it, our world would turn to be Within Temptation's UTOPIA <3 ;)
This song is great, although it is slow; but with this makes you think about it :) i loved it!
This is what I thought: Because he does not have the power to stop people from committing crimes. If we assume he's some kind of God, God did create life, but all he could do afterwards was merely watching the human and their society. If he's an angel, angel can't punish human either. He can just save them at the very least (like he did with the little boy)

So he's trying to tell the mankind to reflect upon their own actions. He can save the innocent souls but can only drop tears for the tainted ones.

Though his message...
Though his message might be all in vain. I like that the song is talking about our reality. It's sad but true.
I think this song is great! I love WT and the more gothic metal songs but this one is really good. I think it's about the little good things. especially after I saw the vid. This guy sees all kind of bad things happen, theft etc. (Why does it have to kill the ideal of who we are?) But in the end he saves the little boy because he knows it's important to do lots of little good things.
just my thoughts

This song is about how the human race is beginning to dwindle. Everything is about "Me", and not about "We" in this day and age. "Utopia" references how people try to blind themselves to the horrors of the dying world. The human race has created their "perfect world". But those of us who see the corruption ask, "If this world is perfect, then why does sorrow rain on Utopia?" Hence the line "Why does it rain, rain, rain, rain on Utopia."
The first verse then is talking about how she has her own aspirations that will take her to a more down-to-earth and wholesome reward. "You're holding my hand but you don't understand." may mean that people are living in partnership with others, but only some can truely understand how to be good. "So where I am going, you won't be in the end." I believe means that she is going to find true pleasure, but a person who has a material goal will only have a material pleasure, a temporary pleasure.
"I'm searching for answers, not given for free." may be asking why people are hurt, but its not an easy answer. "You're taking the road all alone in the end." is saying that being evil and taking what is not yours is going to make you very lonely in the long run, because no one will like it.
So all in all, Utopia to me is about how the human race is killing itself with greed, and they're pretending they're not. The human race has created Utopia, but but we all ask why it rains there if its so perfect.
I agree with AngelsSorrow. This song speaks about the corruption and the grief we bring to each other, trying to emphasize that we are the ones that cause it. Khandi said "be the change you want to see in the world" yet for some reason these words come short when we evaluate what WE as a person want to be and not as humans want to achieve. The video of the song is also informative about its concept. In the end, the "wanderer"(?) saves a boy from being killed, giving the meaning that all the hope for a better tomorrow is at the hands of the children. As
always. WT kicks ass, Sharon kicks MAJOR ASS and this goes straight to my cellphone as a ringtone. :)
I think this song is about a broken relationship that is nearing its end. The first verse shows the wish of the person to break free from this relationship:
"The burning desire To live and roam free"
and that there is no hope for them both to go on:
"So where I am going You won't be in the end"
The chorus then is a reflections on the whole relationship. The person basicly asks what happened to all the hope and dreams (their Utopia) they both had at the time they fell in love.
I think the second verse signals a bit of selfdoubt. Maybe it was my fault the the love went cold:
"You're hurting inside Is there life within me?"
During the song it becomes obvious that the other person in this relationship still thinks that they can save this love, but still can't see the doubt.
"You're holding my hand But you don't understand"
So to sum it all up. The person in this song has serious doubt about a current relationship and has the desire to break free from it to follow his/her dreams
No offense, but this is response exactly portrays the real meaning of the song. When he says "dreaming of china, and the perfect romance," he's talking about the things that we use to blind ourselves to the hurt we cause each other. By leaving this response (again, no offence) you're pretty much covering the true meaning of the song by saying its a love/breakup song. I guess metaphorically it is. Have you watched the video that goes along with the song? the whole video is pretty much a montage of the sins people commit.

Well, I think the general meaning is way more simple. The Utopia we're listening about is "the perfect romance"; the perfect romance that they would like to live now, and also the Perfect Romance that everyone could in theory live ("in search of the cure of mankind"). They're together, but they don't really seem to understand each other. So, Sharon hopes to find "the door to open your mind", that is a way to make her lover understand her perfectly; to carry out the dream in colour she's dreaming. But it necessarely rains on utopia (in their romance they have to face problems). I think that "the ideal of who we are" is referred to them both together, as a couple, and not to each of them singly. The "lights" supposed to "die down" are just a way to express the end of any argument and misunderstanding, which still seems far far away.
Why does it rain, rain, rain down on utopia
I love that line in this song because it's like if it is saying " why do bad things happen in life when life itself is said to be happy"
i listen to this when im depress all times
Tend to agree with Musicsaviour...it's an exclamation of life's tragedy's and inconviences that blemishes a utopian life. Lyrically i tend to align more with the ppl on the board saying it's a declaration to do right over wrong, but when watching the video, i tend to feel it's an acceptance that it'll rain in Utopia...

This song, to me, is about how painful it is to finally wake up and see the injustice, wars, corruption, greed, and hatred that's in the world. People who were formerly in a trance state, thinking the world was a "Utopia" (hence the name of the song) and that problems would solve themselves. It hurts to wake up to see that life is more than themselves. Life is about all of us; as a race; as a species, and we have the duty to protect this planet and ourselves.
This song is about waking up to what's really going on, and how hard it is to realize how big of fools we've been.
