The Perfect Space Lyrics
I wanna have friends that I can trust,
that love me for the man I’ve become not the man I was.
I wanna have friends that will let me be
all alone when being alone is all that I need.
I wanna fit in to the perfect space,
feel natural and safe in a volatile place.
And I wanna grow old without the pain,
give my body back to the earth and not complain.
Will you understand when I am too old of a man?
And will you forget when we have paid our debt
who did we borrow from? Who did we borrow from?
Okay part two now clear the house.
The party’s over take the shouting and the people,
get out!
I have some business and a promise that I have to hold to.
I do not care what you assume or what the people told you.
Will you understand, when I am too old of a man?
Will you forget when we have paid our debts,
who did we borrow from? Who did borrow from?
I wanna have pride like my mother has,
And not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad.
And I wanna have friends that I can trust,
that love me for the man I’ve become and not the man that I was.
that love me for the man I’ve become not the man I was.
I wanna have friends that will let me be
all alone when being alone is all that I need.
feel natural and safe in a volatile place.
And I wanna grow old without the pain,
give my body back to the earth and not complain.
Will you understand when I am too old of a man?
And will you forget when we have paid our debt
who did we borrow from? Who did we borrow from?
The party’s over take the shouting and the people,
get out!

Essentially, this song is about growing up, maturing, changing, wanting to age gracefully (don't we all want that?), sacrificing, and wanting everybody around you to accept it all instead of judging who you are on the pretenses of who you were when you were younger. Especially powerful considering what's happening in the Avett Bros' lives right now.
I think this song is about someone wanting to find acceptance from the people around them, but doesn't; and hopes that when those people do accept him that it's not too late (Will you understand when I am too old of man?).
I first heard this song when I was coming out and I really related to the search for acceptance described in the song. So for me it's always been a song about coming out.
Glad the situation made your situation more comfortable. People should never have to feel uncomfortable for that.

That should read the song made your situation :)

This song is so beautiful. I think it's pretty self explanatory.
I've made a lot of changes in my life the last couple of years. Hopefully they are for the best. The first line is especially meaningful to me. This is a brilliant song.
...And I wanna grow old without the pain, give my body back to the earth and not complain...
I see the same lyrics all over the place, but I swear I hear
"give my body back to the earth and not the flame"
as in, dying a death that doesn't result in going to hell. :)
I definitely hear "complain" but an interesting alternative. Totally makes sense.
