Battle Hymn of the Republic Lyrics

Words: Julia W. Howe, 1861, alt.
Music: “John Brown’s Body,” 19th Century American camp meeting tune.
John Brown was an American abolitionist who led a short lived insurrection to free the slaves.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free;
His truth is marching on.
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! While God is marching on.

Cover art for Battle Hymn of the Republic lyrics by Joan Baez

I think this is the tune that influenced Internationale; after 1945 meeting on Elba, Red Army soldiers took this tune to Soviet Union with some random Russian words - and those were the first version that I learned the tune with, in 1960-s. Now I look at this hymn - well, it does remind me "Arise ye workers from your slumbers, Arise ye prisoners of want"...
