Break Lyrics

Tonight, my head is spinning
I need something to pick me up
I've tried but nothing is working
I won't stop
I won't say I've had enough
Tonight, I start the fire
Tonight I break away,

Break!
Away from everybody
Break!
Away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take, yourself to higher places

oh oh

At night I feel like a vampire
It's not right
I just can't give it up
I'll try to get myself higher
Let's go
We're gonna light it up
Tonight we start the fire
Tonight we break away

Break!
Away from everybody
Break!
Away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take, yourself to higher places

oh oh oh

If you can't stand,
the way this place is
Take, yourself, to higher places

Break!
Away from everybody
Break!
Away from everything
If you can't stand the way this place is
Take, yourself to higher places

oh oh

Higher places,
oh oh
to higher places,
oh oh
higher places,
Take yourself to higher places

First off, great song. Every time I listen to it I get a rush of energy. Hopefully all of "Life Starts Now" will rock as hard as this single.

I think this song could be about many things, including rising above the crowd, and taking charge of your life, as vane and Angel of Sin have already pointed out. But I'd like to add another possible angle... (wait for it) ... DRUGS! :)

Now, I'll be the first to admit that there are far too many songs that people claim are ONLY about drugs. And usually I just laugh when people say that a song is only about drugs, especially when the lyrics are far too ambiguous to make this claim. So, I don't think this song is merely about drug use, but it could be one interpretation. A drug interpretation does seem far too obvious for a song like this... but what the hell, eh?

"Tonight, my head is spinning I need something to pick me up"

  • I'm craving another fix. I'd like to take something to ease my pain. I'm not in a good state of mind, why don't I alter it?

"Tonight, I start the fire Tonight I break away,"

  • I'm going to light up, or maybe shoot up. I'm going to leave this state of consciousness, I'm going to break away from society's expectations.

"Break! Away from everybody Break! Away from everything"

  • Get away, or escape, from the crap you face in life, the people you can't stand, and forget about life for a while. Take a break from worrying about life.

"If you can't stand the way this place is Take, yourself to higher places"

  • If life is getting you down, get high. If everything sucks, escape to a different state of mind/reality/consciousness. Go on a trip.

"At night I feel like a vampire It's not right I just can't give it up I'll try to get myself higher"

  • I go out at night looking for my next fix to ease my cravings (like a vampire). It's not a good thing to do, but I'm addicted (to some extent, could be physical or mental addiction). So I'll get high.

"We're gonna light it up"

  • Let's blaze this J. :) (Or, in other words) We're going to get high on something/smoke something.

Like I said before, I'm not the kind of guy who sees drug references in every song, and I realize songs have multiple meanings, both to the song writers and listeners. So I may be way off, but I find the possible drug references fairly strong in this song.

Ugh, seriously? If you're not the type of guy to see drug references everywhere don't put them in this song. Your explanations seem rather far fetched. This isn't a song where you need to fill in the blanks like that.

I totally agree with rocknrolla2009. Alot of people do make unnecessary assumptions that songs are about drugs. However, I think its pretty obvious he's talking about marijuana in this song. He says "get myself higher" and "we're gonna light it up." What else could that possibly mean? Its pretty straightforward.

Also in "Home" by TDG, he says "by the time you come home, i am already stoned" so it is likely he would be talking about his marijuana use here too.

i agree with rocknrolla as well but it's not about marajuana it's about heroine.

It's a message to all the people complaining about their lives. Kind of like Riot, he wants us all to stand up and take charge of our own lives and make them better in some way. In each verse, he starts with a complaint, something's not right, nothing's working, etc. But he finishes by talking about the fire and how he's going to break away to higher places. So what are we waiting for? Let's go!

I think the answer lies in the chorus.

"Break! Away from everybody Break! Away from everything If you can't stand the way this place is Take, yourself to higher places"

I think it is about breaking the mold. What is that mold, you might ask? I think that mold is the stereotypical rock n roll mold that most bands fit themselves into. The whole black and white with skulls charade if you will. Even after watching the video, looking at their album art, they are definitely breaking this "mold." The addition of pinks and purples is a visual representation of this message, to break away from stereotypes and carbon copy molds that society makes for you.

For you to break away from it all and to do what you want to do.

That is what I think this song embodies.

Basically the summary of the chorus is "Be yourself. If you don't like who we are, you can go **** off."

The line of "start the fire" is a Billy Joel reference - To start the fire, to start something contagious, to break away from old trends and start anew.

at first i laughed at it b/c it in a sense promotes suicide.

"Break Away from everybody Break Away from everything If you can't stand the way this place is Take Yourself to higher places."

from what i've heard. it's about Adam and his recent drug problems. Tho he's gotten better, he broke away from it, cuz he couldn't stand the way they were running his life. Major kudos to Adam.

I think the whole song is basically about getting over all the crap you've been through or whatever difficult time you're going through and pushing through, saying that a person can only take but so much.

"Break! Away from everybody Break! Away from everything If you can't stand the way this place is Take, yourself to higher places."

The last two lines are some of my favorite song lyrics of all time. I think it's a metaphor, personally; it's saying, hey! If you can't stand anything about this life, this town, these people, this job, etc., then take yourself to higher places (higher places being better friends and a better life for yourself). That's just my personal opinion on it.

No One's Commented yet???? I'm shocked. My opinion...BEST Three Days Grace song! Ummm...I think this song relates to me. I think it's about realizing you don't like your life or you wanna make it better, so you Break away from things you did back then and focus on making a better future. I think that's one look at it. Don't get me wrong, I could be flatout wrong. I also see this as being about like staying away from Cliques. Like if you don't like it, break away and be better. Just a suggestion.

i'm going with what rocknrolla said because thats exactly how i felt when i was breaking my addiction to drugs. thats probaly why i'm so connected with this song. or maybe it's the part where i'm a musician and can tell that this song is fucking awesome

Oh, and did they have to jump on the vampire bandwagon? =P

feeling like a vampire is a reference to staying up all night...because of being high

Ok, in y opinion I agree with everyone but knowing about three days grace songs in the past they have written songs about suicide. I belive that this might be another on of those songs. For example when he said nothing is working. if could be life isn't working for him. Also it says break away from everybody so tell me how can you break away from everyone without killing yourself. Another point why I think it might mean suicide is because when he says " take yourself to higher place ". When you die what do most people think? You die and go to heaven. well tell me what is a higher place then Heaven?

Song Meaning
Cover art for Break lyrics by Three Days Grace

In the verses i think it has multiple meanings. I think he is talking about drugs, and he wants to stop but can't. You can tell because in the chorus he talks about breaking away to higher places. In the verses he talks about he fills like a vampire and he just can't give it up. Talking about doing the drugs and not being able to give them up. But tonight he'll break away!
