Ill with Want Lyrics
I am sick with wanting and it's evil and it's daunting
How I let everything I cherish lay to waste
I am lost in greed, this time it's definitely me
I point fingers but there's no one there to blame
A need for something, now let me break it down again
A need for something but not more medicine
I am sick of wanting and it's evil how it's got me
And every day is worse than the one before
The more I have the more I think I'm almost where I need to be
If only I could get a little more
A need for something, now let me break it down again
A need for something but not more medicine
Something has me, oh something has me
Acting like someone I don't wanna be
Something has me, oh something has me
Acting like someone I know isn't me
Ill with want and poisoned by this ugly greed
Temporary is my time, ain't nothing on this world that's mine
Except the will I found to carry on
Free is not your right to chose
It's answering what's asked of you
To give the love you find until it's gone
A need for something, now let me break it down again
A need for something but not more medicine
Something has me, oh something has me
Acting like someone I don't wanna be
Something has me, oh something has me
Acting like someone I know isn't me

A need for something, now let me break it down again A need for SOMETHING BUT NOT MORE medicine
looking for a curative for the evils of greed?
A recognition of a searching that can't be fulfilled simply by attaining more of what you already have?
Not to be a stickler but "Free is not your right to choose" not "Free is not your right to chose." One letter difference but it's pretty big. Anyway, great song. One of my favorites on this album
This is my first comment on a song. I don't like those on here that try to make a song about God that is clearly not about God. I don't think this song is about God, but there is real biblical truth in this song. Materialistic things never satisfy and seeking them only can turn us evil. The bit about freedom seems to be a direct reference to Galatians 5:13. It basically says that freedom is not given to indulge ourselves but rather to give ourselves to loving others.
"A need for something, now let me break it down again A need for something but not more medicine"
A very poignant statement to make in today's society.
"The more I have the more I think I'm almost where I need to be If only I could get a little more"
Defiantly a comment on society--a very good comment.
Maybe I am totally wrong here, but it seems pretty obviously to me that this song is about drug addiction. I think anyone who has gone through a drug addiction (me being one of those people) can see that pretty plainly. BUT I also agree that it can be viewed on another level, particularly dealing with the greed that is so prevalent in (American) capitalistic society today. However, while I am sure the Avett Brothers are smart enough that they were aware of multiple meanings behind this song (or at least particular lines in the song), I definitely think it was written, as a whole, about dealing with and trying to overcome drug addiction.
@deekbooter It's about their addiction to success/fame (just as much a drug to them). They recognize an insatiable thirst, but in their heart know that the fame is not what will be what fulfills it. @Philsname32 nailed the scriptural reference up above, they know what what their purpose is and how misguided their focus is. This is about their continued internal conflict of seeking fame over love/fellowship/family.
