In a Jar Lyrics

Stones in your eyes, stones in your eyes.
Stones in your eyes, stones in your mouth.
Stones in your ears, stones in your mind.
Stones in your eyes, stones in your eyes.

We live in a jar and think the lid's the sky.
You're hoping for a savior on your cross outside.
Stars are just a million little fireflies.
The sun is just a hole; what is the light outside?

[backwards recording: The chariots shall rage in the streets]

No one save me cause I'm
Sinking, drowning but I'm
Struggling to save my life
Where you going?
Is it safe tonight?

Maybe I should rest, but on the seventh day
I've created nothing and I'm wide awake.
So can I tie my key to your electric kite?
The rooster crowed twice and you kissed me goodnight.

There's too many saviors on my cross again.
I know I'm never gonna be a perfect man.
Everyone's an oyster with their grain of sand.
I love you most in summer, now it has to end.

No one save me cause I'm
Sinking, drowning but I'm
Struggling to save my life
Where you going?
Is it safe tonight?

Stones in your eyes, stones in your eyes.
Stones in your eyes, stones in your eyes.
Stones in your eyes, stones in your eyes.
I'd run a million miles if you were first prize.

No one save me cause I'm
Sinking, drowning but I'm
Struggling to save my life
Where you going?
Is it safe tonight?

Brand New has this kinda "secret" Ping account (it's an iTunes social network thing) where hey listed themselves as a user rather than a band like they could of. Under the pseudonym Bran New, the band has discreetly talked to some of the few fans that actually follow the account. Recently they changed their name to Trevor Brown... I don't know why. But that's besides the point. The reason I bring all of this up is because about a year ago, when they were still Bran New and active, I sent them a message praising Daisy (my favorite album of all time) and asking what the chorus to this very song was. I was dying to know and I had been trying to figure it out for awhile, as I see you gentlemen are trying to do as well. Well about two months later, the band ACTUALLY responded. Here is the message exactly as it was sent:

" Hey, Mark P!

I'm glad to hear you like the album man. Flattering. Your message caught me by surprise.. didnt know people could send us messages here. Anyway, here are those lyrics. Enjoy.. But dont think about em too hard..

No one save me cause I'm Sinking, drowning but I'm Struggling to save my life Where you going?  Is it safe tonight?

Cheers! Vin "

Needless to say, I was amazed. Anyway, just thought I should create an account so I could share this with you guy. Clear up the confusion. In the words of FREAKING Vinnie Accardi, enjoy! :)

I figured the electric kite thing was a reference to Ben Franklin.

definitely

not exactly sure how that works in the context of the song, but we still don't know the chorus.

The chorus is definitely, "no one saved me, so i'll save...". This verse is preceded by "..now it has to end," so basically he saying that his relationship with God has to end - God didn't save him, so he is taking matters into his owns hands, choosing not to live in a jar - an altered state of reality - but he doesn't now where to go from here. And like SLT said earlier, it appears that God is becoming less important in a world where man is making more advances on his own, hence the electic kite reference.

As for the rooster crowed twice and your kissed me goodnight, I think the narrator is essentially Peter from the Bible. Jesus said Peter would disown him three times before the rooster crowed twice. So the narrator is kissing God goodnight - abandoning him or disowning him - just like Peter.

All in all, the jar is just an metaphor for the fake world that the narrator believes Christianity/Religion can create for believers - hence the stones blocking all of our sense (sight, hearing, taste) from what really is.

I read through all of the actual descriptions of the meanings and couldnt find one that really said what I thought the song was about until I reached the last one...this one! This is spot on!
If you REALLY listen to the last 2 albums Brand New has written you will find that Jesse has clearly lost his faith. Nice job!

The sun is just a hole, and there's a light outside.

After the sun/outside line the quiet has a line from a recording played in reverse:

"The chariots shall rage in the streets," which is a line from Nahum 2:4

My interpretation is that it plays on "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." The mind part is added to invoke absence of thinking. As for stones, "let he who is without sin cast the first stone." As in, people are ignoring their own sins, but they're swift to cast stones at others in light of it.

Very close Arter, but I don't think the "kissed goodnight" line is a "good boy" sort of thing. I think it refers to the kiss that Judas gave to Jesus to point him out to to the soldiers. That line in particular has a strong theme of betrayal, which can be seen in quite a bit of this song. But most of the betrayal mentioned isn't a literal betrayal. The "people in the jar" are betrayed by reality. They have no way to differentiate what they believe is real from what's actually real. "Plato's Cave" (as mentioned before) is a perfect example of this. The shadows that the people see on the wall become their reality, as opposed to a reflection of reality, much like the people in the jar see the fireflies as the stars and the hole in the jar as the sun.

Wow, I think you pretty much nailed it.

im 85 percent sure these are the lyrics to the chorus...

no one save me tonight take a try, but leave a light, somewhere safe, but i know, where you're going, is not safe tonight

A few small corrections:

  • [The sun is just a hole, it is the light outside] Should be "The sun is just a hole, what is the light outside?"

  • [I love you most, the summer now it has to end] Should be "I loved you most in summer, now it has to end"

  • [I'd run a million miles if you were first prize] Should be "I'd run a million miles if you weren't first prize"

Here's my try at the choruses:

No one save me: go on, take it slowly Come on! Someone figure it out Why there's no one that can save me now

No one save me: go on, take it slowly Come on! Someone figure it out Why there's no one that can save me now Why there's no one that can save me now

No one save me: go on, take it slowly Come on! Someone figure it out Why there's no one that can save me now Why there's no one that can save me now Why there's no one that can save me now

i think your right...

except for this

>

  • [I'd run a million miles if you were first prize] Should be "I'd run a million miles if you weren't first prize"
  • im pretty sure its "were"

  • [I'd run a million miles if you were first prize] Should be "I'd run a million miles if you weren't first prize"
  • im pretty sure its "were"

From the live version I hear:

"No one saved me so I'm sinking slowly from... (?) there is nowhere that is safe tonight"
