That Golden Rule Lyrics

Son of Henry, I'm the first in line
To the throne, smell my mustard gas
I slash swords through your wooden spine
Well it touched my heart and it broke my hand

I made love at the side of the road
The rain's lashing, better row this boat fast
This river is particularly sinister
Close your eyes and take my hand

I want to scream one last death medley
I am looking for a reason to secure a forward motion

Love that golden rule, that golden rule
Need that golden rule, that golden rule
Secrets are the truth, they are the truth
I need that silver rule, that silver rule

Face to face with the ball and chain
My bulbous head flapping 'til it's red
I tell my secrets and expose my pain
About a broken heart and I will do it again
Son of Henry, I'm the first in line
To the throne, smell my mustard gas
I slash swords through your wooden spine
Well it cut my heart and it blew my head

I want to scream one last death medley
I am looking for a reason to secure a forward motion

Love that golden rule that golden rule
Need that golden rule that golden rule
Secrets are the truth they are the truth
We need that silver rule that silver rule

I love this line: "I am looking for a reason to secure a forward motion". I mean, they could have just said something like "I need a reason to carry on", but I love that they chose this wording instead. Don't really know what the song means, but it's awesome.

My Opinion

The golden rule allows a judge to depart from a word's normal meaning in order to avoid an absurd result.

It was created in English court.

Related to the song, it's like he's trying to adapt himself to a new way, fighting and trying to get out of a relation.

My two cents

This song is so fucking powerful. Love it.

Don't quite understand what the golden rule is, though. Does it have anything to do with the golden ratio? Maybe that's why they are in a Parthenon-like building in the video... Just guessing here.

This song is immense....i think it might have something to do with a battle thought between kings or something(guess) but this is what the first few lines suggest.

is it 'this pretty river' rather than just 'this river'?

Anybody else find the bulbous red flapping head image deeply strange? o_O

The "Golden Rule" is treat others as you would like to be treated in a few relgions as far as I know. So I'm guessing it's something along those lines?

I think this song is about a relationship that is a constant battle (violence references) or is going downhill and the protagonist is stuggling to come out on top (or without getting hurt). This is causing much frustration and in the end he just wants to move on, "I want to scream one last death medley, I am looking for a reason to secure a forward motion". Also it might be a reflection of the good and bad points of the relationship (second verse). Yea I agree with the golden rule being 'treat others as you would wish to be treated' and the chorus brings this up as a reminder to the other person in the relationship.
