Your Ghost (Kristin Hersh cover) Lyrics
if i walk down this hallway
tonight, it's too quiet
so i pat through the dark
and call you on the phone
push your old nummers
and let your house ring
till i wake your ghost
let him walk down your hallway
it's not this quiet
slide down your receiver
sprint across the wire
follow my number
slide into my hand
it's the blaze across your nightgown
it's the phone's ring
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
i can't drink this coffee
till i put you in my closet
let him shoot me down
and let him call me off
take it from his whisper
you're not that tough
it's the blaze across your nightgown
it's the phone's ring
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
(repeats till end)
tonight, it's too quiet
so i pat through the dark
and call you on the phone
push your old nummers
and let your house ring
till i wake your ghost
it's not this quiet
slide down your receiver
sprint across the wire
follow my number
slide into my hand
it's the phone's ring
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
i think last night, you were driving circles around me
till i put you in my closet
let him shoot me down
and let him call me off
take it from his whisper
you're not that tough
it's the phone's ring
(repeats till end)

I have to agree with everything that lozte said- it sees to make sense that Greg is singing about calling an ex-lover to confront her about their past relationship (to "put her in his closet") so thathe is able to "drink his coffee", aka move on, but instead a new boyfriend answers the phone and that's where we get the "let him shoot me down/ and let him call me off".
But from the next lines ("take it from his whisper/ you're not that tough") it means that the new boyfriend is whispering harshly at him but still whispering for fear that she might crack in her resolve (her toughness to stay away from Greg) and dump this new boyfriend.
Now! To address this line: "it's the blaze across your nightgown/ it's the phone's ring" I believe that the "blaze" is the passion that Greg and she shared (this assumption only comes with the mention of the word "nightgown"). From this, Greg's refering to their passion as his calling her, aka he still has feelings for her (but because of the closet line, I'm still assuming that he just wants to make things clear before he even thinks of moving on).
The driving on circles bit could be literal (which I highly doubt) but most likely it's refering to the fact that she was on his mind all night, driving continuous circles of uncertainty in his mind as he thinks the situation over and over again.
That's what I think, anyway!:)
This is a beautiful song. Its one of those songs that can just make you cry in an instant. I dont know what the song is about. But in my point of view, it reminds me of someone who is thinking of a loved one who has pass. And they cant get over them. Im sure i might be wrong but for some reason everytime i hear this song it remind me of death and love.
the refrences to "him"/ "he" come from the fact tht this was originally written and sung by a girl Kristin Hersh in the 90s hope tht helps clairfy any confusion
I forgot about that! Thanks!

what is a "blaze across your nightgown"? i love that part of the song but i don't get it. does he mean an actual flame?
The original song by Kristen Hersh says, "Blaze across my nightgown."

Before I knew it was a cover I thought that meant the girl he was singing about died in a fire but since the lyrics are the above... It's a bit cryptic.

She may have meant like... A flash of light at night while she walks. It reminds her of the person she lost. It's like a flashback I guess. I dunno though.

The rest of the song is pretty obvious though.

I think he means blood. Think about it, a blaze is red, if it's down her nightgown I'd infer that its red blood.

This song is really deep, but for some reason I think it refers to murder.

When a car goes by a house at night, the headlights come through the window and go across the wall as the car moves. This could be the "blaze" across her nightgown. Couple this with the line "I think last night you were driving circles around me," and it seems quite probable.

I'd assume it means a scarlet letter. It's a blaze (of red). If we're going with the cheating ex theory...

i love this song, its haunting can anyone recommend any other songs like this
This song really reminds me of Mat Kearney's music. You might check him out. Maybe Brendan James.

This was used at the end the Dollhouse episode "A Love Supreme". Two characters were struggling with the loss and the remnants of their loved ones. So arod, your description isn't off at all. Certainly a common interpretation. And I agree - it's one of those songs that just draws out the tears and doesn't stop.
After listening to this song on repeat for a few days, and falling in absolute LOVE with the lyrics and melody, I personally draw my own conclusion as to what it means. I think it's about someone calling someone who is now with another person. The person their with, answering the phone, and going off on the guy. I believe he was calling for closure, "I can't drink this coffee, till I put you in my closet" and doesn't want to hang up without that "Let him shoot me down, and let him call me off," the lover obviously not being civil about it. Anyway, that's just my interpretation. Beautiful song despite what you get out of it.
Correction: I meant to say "Someone calling an ex-lover who is now with another person." Realized it sounded far too redundant. Sorry about that!
Okay, so here's my interpretation:
if i walk down this hallway tonight, it's too quiet so i pat through the dark and call you on the phone push your old nummers and let your house ring till i wake your ghost
It's him walking through his house, he tries to walk softly because he doesn't want to break the silence that's been left since he lost his lover. He calls the girl's house, knowing she won't pick up because she's gone, so that's why he would be letting the "house ring till I wake your ghost."
let him walk down your hallway it's not this quiet slide down your receiver sprint across the wire follow my number slide into my hand
I think this means the actual spirit, he wants to feel her with him through the phone. I don't know why he refers to it as a "he" though, so I could be wrong. But "sprint across the wire, follow my number, slide into my hand," sounds like my meaning.
it's the blaze across your nightgown it's the phone's ring
Maybe as he's listening to the phone ring, he's watching a candle's flames reflect on a nightgown she had left at his house. This is a really beautiful image I think.
i can't drink this coffee till i put you in my closet let him shoot me down and let him call me off take it from his whisper you're not that tough
This is close to what lozte said, he's calling for closure, to hear her voice one last time even though he knows he can't. I think "him" is either a relative of the dead girl that didn't like the singer, or her husband that she was cheating on with him.
"Him" is correct. This song is a cover, originally by Kristin Hersh.

Interesting - Per abbylee17 this was originally sung by Kristin Hersh. The Wiki page for the song is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_Ghost
It says the song was made to pay homage to a movie from 1943 about a woman having a dream. Read the plot of the movie here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meshes_of_the_Afternoon
