We were in your basement hiding out
Eating pills and falling in love
There's only one thing I could never doubt
It's in my arms right now

But you do what you gotta do
Don't worry about what they say about you
Is it true? Is it true?
You do what you gotta do
Don't worry what they say about, us

So fold your hands child
And walk straight now
Go on and take your best shot
They can never find our secret hiding spot
Where we play all day
We'll go on and on anyway

We're just a little older baby now
But we don't got to be what they want
Cause I still got a little boy at heart
He wants to fuck shit up

Cause we gotta do what we gotta do
We never even cared about you
It's the truth, it's the truth
We do what we gotta do
We've only gotta care about, us

So fold your hands child
And walk straight now
Go on and take your best shot
They can never find our secret hiding spot
Where we play all day
We'll go on and on anyway

When I was around
I was the only one protecting you
Now that I'm gone
How can you do the things we used to do?
I know it's clear that times are changing
But I'm staying the same
I know the fear is paralyzing
When nothing matters at all

So fold your hands child
And walk straight now
Go on and take your best shot
They can never find our secret hiding spot
Where we play all day
We'll go on and on anyway
On and on anyway
On and an anyway yeah

i think in the verse before the last chorus it's 'but nothing matters at all' instead of 'we're not'

when gabe was talking about the meaning to this song he compared it to 'the kids are all fucked up' (from - while the city sleeps...) the same kind of 'indie, soft, heartfelt song' and about being in love, but being fucked up.

i've been listening to hot mess on the leak all day and i'm really in love with this song! fave so farr !!

So Far, This is my favorite song on Hot Mess

I like how it is more like While The City Sleeps. Don't get me wrong, I still love Viva, and Hot Mess Cobra. All of their CD's have their own unique qualities while still being the same Cobra Starship

For the first verse, in the booklet, it says:

We were in your basement, hiding out Eating pills and falling in love There's only one thing I could never doubt It's in my arms right now

Thats what it says, but it deffinately sounds like he says 'feel' not 'doubt'. It wouldn't be the first time he's changed up words.

Also, intead of: "'Cause I still got a little more ... That wants to shake things up"

It's, "Cause I still gotta little boy at heart that wants to fuck shit up"

This is my favorite out of the album also. I listened to it on the leak and on Purevolume, I still need my 20 dollars that my sister still owes me to buy it.

It is reminiscent of When The City Sleeps We Rule The Streets, which was my favorite of the three.

ill be honest with all of you when i first heard this song i thought it was about gabe and a boy in there childhood, who were together. HAHA I just called Gabe gay. im sorry gabe.

Yeah, you do what you gotta do Don't worry what they say about you (Is it true, is it true?) Yeah, you do what you gotta do Don't worry what they say about us

thats why i thought it "is it true is it true?" someone caught them or he came out. but it could be about a girl for all i know

all i know forsure.. i think.. its about love <3

Honestly, I'm pretty convinced that this song has to do with at least one of the people being in the closet.

"'Cause we do what we gotta do We never even care about truth (It's the truth, it's the truth) Yeah, we do what we gotta do We're only gonna care about us" The speaker is accepting of this and knows, but is indifferent to what people may think and thinks that his friend should be too.

"And walk straight now" Walk STRAIGHT. Pretened to be straight.

Beyond that, all of the constant mentions of "hiding", "secret", and the overall fear of people finding out the truth screams of closeted homosexuality. It almost sounds as if Gabe is a protective friend and not in a relationship with the other guy, but that's up in the air.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
