The Sandman, The Brakeman and Me Lyrics
The Brakeman is letting off some steam
This has to be the slowest train that I have ever seen
And the Sandman's waiting to deliver me my dream
Guess I'll lay my head against my elbow and the window
Watch the wheels go, watch the wheels go
Roll on, roll on, old little train
Brakeman blow your whistle, throw your weight upon the chain
Make way, for whatever will be, will be
Between the Sandman, the Brakeman and me
And the Sandman's waiting to deliver me my dream
Deliver me my dream
Deliver me my dream today
Guess I'll lay my head against my elbow and the window
Let my wheels go, let my wheels go
And roll on, roll on, old little train
Brakeman blow your whistle, throw your weight upon the chain
Make way, whatever will be, will be
For the Sandman, the Brakeman and me
Roll on, roll on, old little train
Brakeman blow your whistle, throw your weight upon the chain
Make way, whatever will be, will be
For the Sandman, the Brakeman and me
This has to be the slowest train that I have ever seen
And the Sandman's waiting to deliver me my dream
Guess I'll lay my head against my elbow and the window
Watch the wheels go, watch the wheels go
Brakeman blow your whistle, throw your weight upon the chain
Make way, for whatever will be, will be
Between the Sandman, the Brakeman and me
Deliver me my dream
Deliver me my dream today
Guess I'll lay my head against my elbow and the window
Let my wheels go, let my wheels go
Brakeman blow your whistle, throw your weight upon the chain
Make way, whatever will be, will be
For the Sandman, the Brakeman and me
Roll on, roll on, old little train
Brakeman blow your whistle, throw your weight upon the chain
Make way, whatever will be, will be
For the Sandman, the Brakeman and me

Disappointment? Even with Milk Thistle and White shoes? How disappointing your taste is, sir.
I'm starting to get sick of people giving Oberst all of the credit. While he is a great artist and all, this is obviously an Ward song, and so shouldn't be enjoyed through an Oberst filter as other songs on the album.
That being said, none of these tracks should be enjoyed through any filters at all, instead enjoyed independently as a new band that the 4 have created.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!
Yes, Thank you! Although Conor is clearly one of the best singer/songwriters out there right now, This is 100% an M. Ward song.

But this is the best song on the album without a doubt.

i agree with all these comments. this is my favorite song on the album, and i was immediately hooked the first time i heard it. i also have a hard time not considering each individual track a song of the musician who obviously wrote it to begin with. i'm trying to curb that and experience monsters of folk as a whole band, not a group of my favorite musicians just guest starring on each other's songs. now to contradict what i just said, this is obviously another beautiful m. ward song. :)

EVERY single time Conor does something new, the first time I listen to it I have absolutely no opinion about it. If anything, maybe a little disappointment, but I've noticed the second or third time I listen to it, it sounds completely different than the first time I did and I get completely HOOKED.
This is my favorite song so far. I'm so excited for the album; 21 days!
this is one of my favorite songs on the album. m. ward's voice is amazing.
and i agree with strangerstrange, i'm pretty tired of conor getting all the credit. m. ward has an amazing voice and is a great songwriter. this song is clearly in his style, if you ever listen to his solo work. it's definately not anything conor's work.
"The Sandman, the Brakeman and Me" This was again a late addition that one came complete from M. Ward, pretty much. We added stuff but very minimal things. I was really moved by that song. We actually used his demo and then I recorded a bunch of keyboards and cymbals and stuff to make parts swell a little bit more and make it dreamy. It's a lullaby, something I want to sing my girl when putting her to sleep. Jim and Conor just did vocals.

whattttt? conor oberst and the mystic valley band is fucking amazing. I seen them at the metro, chicago in july and he gave me the chills, i even got close to tears.
i agree with the comment about feeling indifferent to it at first then getting hooked the 3rd time around! i was completely like that for Outer South, i thought it was complete rubbish first time, now some of those songs are my favourites!
When I first heard this I immediately thought of the sandman comics by neil gaiman. Anyone else!?!??!?!
I think Matt wrote this song about the band in general. The Brakeman being Oberst, the Sandman being James, and Me being Matt.
This song is going to be played at my funeral.
