I was on my way, I swear
But I took a wrong turn there
For I zigged when I should have zagged
It’s a sombre turn-out tonight in chemistry class
Tragedy in our park
Something happened in the dark
We brought raincoats and pretty charms
And I did remember this time to keep it inside
Then we kept the water still
On the broken window sill
For if not, we’d have to move
It is green outside
Where it seems magical
And if nothing works
We’ll do nothing
I hope we’re on time
And we shouldn’t look at the sky
The perilous light
We were not allowed outside
And no one could tell us why
I got worried, with shaky hands
So we said the words that we kept for worrying times
I was on my way, I swear
But I lost my way somewhere
And the trees were listening
From the sill is trickling water when the rain returns
We have our suspicions, thinking what my heart confirms
It is sweet outside
Where it seems magical
And if nothing works
We’ll do nothing
Save yourself tonight
Asleep in the dark
I hope we’re on time
But I took a wrong turn there
For I zigged when I should have zagged
It’s a sombre turn-out tonight in chemistry class
Tragedy in our park
Something happened in the dark
We brought raincoats and pretty charms

But I lost my way somewhere
And the trees were listening

And if nothing works

Save yourself tonight
Asleep in the dark
I hope we’re on time

This song is quickly becoming one of my favorites on the album. "For I zigged when I should have zagged" is priceless... 9/25 needs to get here quicker.
One correction that I am relatively sure of:
"We were gonna laugh outside" should be "We were not allowed outside".
Thanks! :)
Thanks! :)
I love the way he says "magical"...actually I love the way he says everything! Oh and I think that the last part sounds like "save yourself tonight".
Thanks. :)
Thanks. :)
People trying to keep some sort of angry army or spirit away... something alluring outside, even though it is dangerous... ancient human charms and words to keep it at bay... Sometimes nothing works, so you do nothing.
I'd like to note the connection between this song and "Swimmer's Chant": "It’s a sombre turn-out tonight in chemistry class Tragedy in our park Something happened in the dark"
and
"In tragedy park Staging it there With seeds to spare"
There isn't necessarily any meaningful connection here, but they did the same with previous albums [Louise Louisa/In Time Do You Forget? and with Half The World Is Watching Me/Behind The Drapes].
I think this song is about his childhood and at least partly about school. :) I really like this song.
Oh, and I read this and though it may be correct.
I think, instead of "Tragedy in our park," it's "Try to do our part."
And, similarly, the first "It is sweet outside" may be "It is green outside," as I have read elsewhere.

the day people truly understand the intended meaning of this song will be a truly great moment for humanity. just kidding, its about school. Actually, it kind of is, haha

I think that it is about somebody forgetting to come but using what he can to his advantage for excuses.in the video there is another guy with him and i think the other guy is helping him with excuses.in the line "I did remember to keep it inside" I think that it means that he usually leaves half valuable things outside and it gets ruined by say weather, robber, etc.
I do agree that the song is mainly about childhood memories, and I think the second verse talks about an eclipse. They talk about a "perilous light" and how they weren't allowed outside but no one could tell them why. Parents are sure to forbid their kids from going outside during an eclipse but a lot of them won't be able to really explain why, because a lot of people don't know what makes the sunlight dangerous during and eclipse.
