This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Lie to me and say you love me
Do it for your sister, honey
Turn me out through leaves of plastic
Seven hours down
Every day I'm late for dinner
Monday night I'm ten pounds thinner
Rolling through the door with Martin
Looking deadly
Girls who love me, girls who hate me
Girls who never really rate me
Come on out and celebrate me
The great god which every woman
Feeds or starves to death
Is staring through the kitchen window
Laughing at me all of the time
All of the time
All of the time
Lucy says she used to be
Like me but now she's doing fine
Mornings at the local bath
And sundays on the rug
If you get sad and you get lonely
Call me up, I'll always know you
I'll be there to hold you when you're seeing double
'Cause you're my friend
'Cause you're my friend
Yeah everyone I know is losing their minds
Yeah but everyone I know has a really good time
Drilling holes in my head, yeah you will never go blind
I will always be the outlaw for your love
One day you will come across
Who you were and what you lost
What day you see with me
Simple truths abound
A simple tide, a simple taste
Will drag you out and make you wait
The drums of life are calling anxious
Every beat of every drum
Is telling you not everyone
Is born to scrap a yardman's son
You just can't see it
Something envied, something green
Something that you took from me
Dreams of love and growing young
But life in the future is blissful and kind
We've got so many questions, love, and so little time
Drilling holes in me head, ah you will never go blind
I will always be the outlaw for your love
Yeah everyone I know is losing their minds
Yeah but everyone I know has a really good time
Drilling holes in me head, ah you will never go blind
I will always be the outlaw for your love
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
Yeah how does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
How does it feel to be
One of the beautiful
One of the beautiful people
Do it for your sister, honey
Turn me out through leaves of plastic
Seven hours down
