Sounds like it's about retribution to me. The first line is the big giveaway; I can't think of a better metaphor for a grudge than that. Then the song slowly alludes to what passed between the narrator and whomever she's addressing, and explores what a desire for vengeance will drive someone to. I mean, with my meaning in mind, I can't help but feel sorry for who she's talking to. The lines "You wanna get up? Let go? I say 'no'," imply that she's already in a position of complete dominance, and her target is completely at her mercy. She doesn't sound too merciful in this track.

Maybe I'm being too literal, but to me it sounds like someone who's being asked to commit a mercy killing and refusing.

"There's a bullet in my pocket burning a hole/You're so far from your weapon and the place you were born/There's a bullet in my pocket burning a hole/You're so far from your weapon and you want to go home" To me, this sounds like these two were in a war maybe, and one got injured and is now asking the narrator to kill them. "A bullet in my pocket burning a hole" could be their knowledge that the person is mortally wounded and the merciful thing is to kill them.

"I try to give you whiskey but it never do work/Suddenly, you're begging me to do so much worse/I new it from the get-go the bullet was cursed/Ever since I had you every little thing hurts" The narrator could have tried to give the injured person whiskey to numb the pain, but it did nothing what for the severity of their injuries. Then the person asks them to end their suffering; thus "now you're begging me to do so much worse." And "I knew from the get go the bullet was cursed" is obviously the same bullet that's burning a hole in their pocket, and the bullet they will inevitably have to use to kill their fatally injured comrade.

"You wanna get up, let go/I say no" The refusal to kill them

"You dream of seeing fire in them hills/You better wipe that smile from your lips/Which of us will be the one to go?/He who hit's the road's the one who lives" The narrator is confused about what to do. The injured one is urging the narrator to do as they ask, maybe in a nice and gentle way so that it puts them on edge - "you beter wipe that smile from your lips." As they may be in a life-threatening situation they need to make a desicion quickly, hence "which of us will be the one to go/he who hit's the road's the one who lives."

Of course I could be completely wrong.

I've always thought this song was about someone trying to prevent someone else from killing himself/herself.

I got these lyrics by ear, so correct me if there are mistakes :)

I think this is the best song on the album. Gotta love Alison.

I don't know what the lyrics mean but it sounds like it has sexual undertones.

I think this song is sexual.

I think the 'bullet' is her libido or some attraction to the other person, and the 'weapon' is the guy's penis, and they had some kind of one night stand, and it's on her mind and she wants him badly but he wants nothing to do with her or regrets it, or maybe doesn't remember it at all. "So much work" could be that he told her to make more of an effort to get him into a relationship, and he's playing hard to get, so this lust for him is "burning a hole in her pocket" because she's chasing him and is unable to get rid of her feelings for him.

No clue if this is right, by the way, just my intepretation.

When I heard this song, it seemed so clear what it meant, until I double checked who was credited with writing the song. Seeing it was Mosshart not White was surprising because to me this song has Meg and Jack all over it, figured it was a song he had written earlier and carried over to TDW. Guess it goes to show how many different ways lyrics can go. Here was my take on it just in case Jack had a hand in these lyrics! Whatever, the song and the album is great!

'I tried to give you whiskey but it never did work',you wanna go home', 'you wanna get up, let go, i said no'....based on statements that Meg's performance anxiety led to canceled tours in the last years of TWS and the statement Meg made that she warmed up with whiskey and redbull before shows

'the place where you were born' ...this is direct and has got to be significant who knows though what it could mean, when relating to Meg, MI where she was born and lives with her fiancee now husband works

'suddenly your begging me to do so much work'...doesn't want to do the shows doesn't help as much with the shows

'bullet in my pocket'....this to me was physical, modern day cupids arrow as in the band name Bullet For My Valentine, or if the anatomy can shoot blanks why not bullets :D

And in the longshots, this last one is the longest shot of all: You dream of seeing fire in them hills....Scotland is a country most known for hills, beautiful in fall, both Jack and Meg are of Scottish descent, TWS played shows in the place of their roots, maybe she loved the country. 'Which one of us will be the one to go He who hits the roads the one who lives'...Jack back out on tour, that is life, living to him, and back to Scotland eventually?

This is totally wrong I know, but I wish it to be true. Jack and Meg always had such a sexual energy in their shows, part of which made them amazing to see. Even though they are both happily remarried, well, you never get over your first real love, even if happier the next time around ;)

To me this song is just about Stephen King's Dark Tower series haha.

Definitely my favortite song on the record. Beautiful.
