Meddler Lyrics

This moment will too pass us by
It's this notion inside all of us to prioritize through our selfish eyes
To be the bull behind the rampage
The reason for all the riot
We'll feed our flame before wasting time on everyone else's
With more problems and less pride
We'll feed our flame before wasting time on everyone else's
The gallows were not supposed to look like this
Oh God,
We live in misery, lying here in desperation
We need you here more than anything right now
If everything's relative, then why the emptiness in our souls?
Trying to untie the knot we thought we were untying our entire lives
We're busied up and burnt out
Everyone together, we will strengthen ourselves
We will Because now we know you wont ever fly fast enough to make time stand still Stop, listen, and learn
You won't ever fly fast enough to make time stand still

I think it's about being wrapped up in yourself and being selfish about the things you want rather than trying to become a better person and also help those around you. The knot I think just shows like there's a lot of little things to work on yet we focus on singular things and turn it into a big deal when really it's just one piece to the puzzle.

We're all too busy to see that that is what is going on in life, and you have to stop and listen and learn how to do things properly instead of always being in a rush.

If everything’s relative, then why the emptiness in our souls? The “emptiness” of the soul is obviously referring to the lack of something within us. I think that this might be referring to what seems like a lack of love or a broken heart, but is actually a broken connection to God. This makes sense because in Christianity it is believed that Jesus Christ (God) is an all loving being and Christ enters us all and works through us through the Holy spirit. If everything is relative, it can relate to each other and so there is a link between everything in this universe. The lyricist is very poetically saying that if everything links to each other then why do some of us have a broken connection with Jesus Christ, the lover. This broken connection with God is the lack of love which is the “emptiness” in our souls. This is backed up by the line that comes earlier saying, “Oh God we live in misery, we need you here more than anything, right now.” I think that the song is like a prayer, asking God to forgive us and fix the broken link between us.

"If everything's relative, then why the emptiness in our souls?"

In our modern western culture, we're told that truth is relative. Everybody's gotta find their own truth. Your truth may be different from my truth may be different from the other guy's truth. We're told we'll find meaning once we "discover ourselves" and "find our own truth."

This breaks down in many ways, but one of the most obvious ways is that even after we embrace this relative mindset, our souls will still be empty. Why is everyone around us still craving more? It's never enough money or pleasure or whatever. Ultimately, there's only one thing that will fill us, and it's not the stuff of this world.

(sorry, I submitted this comment to the album page when I just meant to put it here on the song page)

The word meddler means someone that is uninvited who takes on issues that don't belong to them.

This moment will too pass us by It's this notion inside all of us to prioritize through our selfish eyes To be the bull behind the rampage The reason for all the riot

^This to me means that life is passing by quickly and that we use that as an excuse to be selfish and do things that we realize we probably shouldn't.

We'll feed our flame before wasting time on everyone else's With more problems and less pride We'll feed our flame before wasting time on everyone else's The gallows were not supposed to look like this

^In this, the flame represents our desires in life, we will take care of what we want before wasting time on other's desires even though they may be more important than our own. The gallows represent mortal earth, it's become only a dark place to die, but instead of being a place where we enrich the lives of others it's an ugly place that focuses on our desires that we need before we die.

Oh God, We live in misery, lying here in desperation We need you here more than anything right now If everything's relative, then why the emptiness in our souls?

^This is a prayer to get God back into our lives and help us to change so that we can see that we are all human and are experiencing much the same journey (life is relative for people), our souls are empty because we don't help others and he wants God to help change that.

Trying to untie the knot we thought we were untying our entire lives We're busied up and burnt out

This is saying that we think one little positive change in our lives (technological advancement) is thought to make an entirely positive change in our lives, but it really only solves one aspect of them. Our lives are busy and exhausting, we don't want to change because we are stuck on moving fast through life.

Everyone together, we will strengthen ourselves We will Because now we know you wont ever fly fast enough to make time stand still Stop, listen, and learn You won't ever fly fast enough to make time stand still

^This one is pretty self explanatory, but it basically states that we now realize that we need to come together fix our mistakes because we know that it is the only way and no amount of increase in speed (technological advancements) in life will allow us to truly appreciate life the way it was supposed to be appreciated.

My Interpretation

@utj90 Great interpretation, but I'd like to one small comment. I don't think that it is specifically about technological advancements, but rather working hard at something for your own gain and success. In an interview, Matt Griener said that this was influenced by a friend they had that spent years as a workaholic trying to find happiness through success. No matter how much he achieved, it was never enough. He ended up burning himself out and got seriously depressed and suicidal.

Overall, I feel that this song is about how, you cannot appreciate life as it was supposed to be...

This song is so sick gave me chills the first time I heard it, I'm not really sure what it means though, I'll have to ponder that for a while. :)

I think the song is about mankinds interest in being the center of attention. That our individual needs should be catered too, and are more important than everyone elses.

Then, there's sort of a realization of the miserable society that was created with that mindset and we ask god to come and help us. God doesn't. And without god having our backs, we realize that it's up to all of us, together, to strengthen ourselves and the world around us without relying on him.

That's just my interpretation though.

My Interpretation

Nice interpretation. I see it very similar, and I would like to contribute to your interpretation.

I think you nailed it on the head with your first paragraph. I feel this songs is definitely speaking out on the concept of being selfish, rather than selfless-- and because we are selfish, we are caught in our own self-consumption. Our own individual needs consume are every day lives, when ideally this world could be a better place if we stood united to accomplish our needs as a whole.

The ending of the song speaks volumes to me, and I take it very...

"We need you here more than anything right now If everything's relative, then why the emptiness in our souls?"

Those two lines are very, very powerful.

I'm honestly not sure what it means, though, except for the part about everyone rising, and strengthening each other. Reminds me of a Bible verse...Proverbs something. Something about sharpening each other.

"As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)

I think the song is about what happens when a Spirit-filled brotherhood comes together. Before, everyone is living with no regard for anyone around them because that's what this world kind of tells us to do. But, in the long run, we notice our emptiness in our hearts and souls and fill that void with God and our brothers in Him.

i agree StartingAFire: "we need you here more than anything right now" that just gives me the chills
