Future Primitive Lyrics
I'm a soldier in the world
But we'll leave it all someday
Whats the use in trying to hide
Where we came from anyway
We are born to this world
Out alone from the beyond
When it's time to return
I wont be looking in the mirror
Future primitive
The ones you left behind
Are still with you my dear
Alive, but half dead
We are here and we're gone
It's our work that marches on
Well we crossed the river once
And we'll do it once again
The valley it will open
And the mountains fall to their knees
Take the good from the past
And leave the rest behind
What you wanted was your life
But you'll get something more
Future primitive
The ones you left behind
Are still with you my dear
Alive and half dead
We are here and we're gone
It's our work that marches on
But we'll leave it all someday
Whats the use in trying to hide
Where we came from anyway
We are born to this world
Out alone from the beyond
When it's time to return
I wont be looking in the mirror
The ones you left behind
Are still with you my dear
Alive, but half dead
We are here and we're gone
It's our work that marches on
And we'll do it once again
The valley it will open
And the mountains fall to their knees
Take the good from the past
And leave the rest behind
What you wanted was your life
But you'll get something more
The ones you left behind
Are still with you my dear
Alive and half dead
We are here and we're gone
It's our work that marches on

mmmaazzzing. I really dig the drums throughout the song...anyone care to shed some light?
i think its about a guy sitting and reflecting on his life- possibly on some traumatic events that he can't get over or someone that he loves that doesn't love him anymore- how he wish he could have held onto them. Maybe he's thinking about all the things he should have said to them or shouldn't have said so that they stayed with him.
I think he's talking about leaving something in the world for once you're dead and no one remembers you.
We are born to this world Out alone from the beyond When it's time to return I wont be looking in the mirror
When he leaves the world he won't be there to see himself or look in the mirror. Future primitive means we're living in the future, we have all this technology, but most people's lives aren't any more meaningful than they were thousands of years ago.
@littletree It's "out on loan from the beyond," which dovetails with the next lyric . . ."When it's time to RETURN." "Alone from the beyond" actually contradicts what the song is about. While we're here, alive, we are part of a society and what we leave as our contribution to that society is what remains when we go back across the river, to the beyond. Central to the point of the song is that we AREN'T alone when we are alive. I wish they'd correct the lyric.

The entire song reminds me a lot of a very broad application of Freud's so-called "death instict," a basic desire to return to the simplest of all states - pre-life, or death.
In practice, this instinct is described as being rooted in the complex, competitive, stressful nature of life. Because of this, it is intrinsically linked to the accomplishments of our society - we are built on the backs of those who are seeking their own ends as a by-product of their work.
This dehumanization of the individual into a body of produced artifacts is referenced in the chorus,
"Future primitive The ones you left behind Are still with you my dear Alive, but half dead We are here and we're gone It's our work that marches on"
Plus all the other lyrics, which heavily feature death/pre-life and a search for purpose. Great song.
The lyric is "Out on loan from the beyond."
The song is about death and social progress. We have our time in the world, we build on the work of those who came before us, then we die. Those who came before are part of us in a way, and we'll be part of those who come after us. The title refers to that duality. I love this song. It's beautiful and haunting.
This song speaks about the fact that we manifested ourselves out of the one mind conciousness to learn something. it also talks of the interconnectedness of all who have manifested and how our birth death and rebirth continues on until completion. This is a statement in song derived from ancient tibetan teachings as well as the thoughts of all metaphysical and occult teachings.
@mountainkid Death and rebirth? "We crossed the river once, and we'll do it ONCE again." We live. We die. We're gone. But what we've left behind continues.
