Vice Verses Lyrics
Walking along the high tide line
Watching the pacific from the sidelines
Wonder what it means to live together?
Looking for more than just guidelines
Looking for signs in the night sky,
Wishing that I wasn’t such a nice guy
Wonder what it means to live forever?
Wonder what it means to die?
I know that there's a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
I got my vice verses
The wind could be my new obsession
The wind could be my new depression
The wind goes anywhere it wants to
Wishing that I learned my lesson
The ocean sounds like a garage band
Coming at me like a drunk man
The ocean tells me a thousand stories
None of them are lies
I know that there's a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
I got my vice verses
Let the pacific laugh
Be on my epitaph
With it's rising and falling
And after all, it's just water
And I am just soul
With a body of water and bones
Water and bones
Where is God in the night sky?
Where is God in the city light?
Where is God in the earthquake?
Where is God in the genocide?
Where are you in my broken heart?
Everything seems to fall apart
Everything feels rusted over
Tell me that you're there
I know that there's a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
These are my vice verses
These are my vice verses
Yeah
These are my vice verses

This song is absolutely amazing! I think it is about Jon contemplating his faith and the meaning of life. He realizes that life isnt always perfect and realizes that there is some reason for this. He acknowledges God's presence in the world we live in today and that he is with us always. Anywhere here is my interpretation of the song by each line/paragraph:
Walking along the high tide line Watching the pacific from the side lines Wonder what it means to live together? Wanting more than just guidelines
//Wondering what it is like to be in Heaven everlastingly with God. He wants more than just guidelines and wants to know the whole truth and why things are the way they are
Looking for signs in the night sky, Wishing that I wasn’t such a nice guy Wonder what it means to live together? Wonder what it means to die?
He is contemplating more about it. Lookng for clues in His creation. Maybe he wishes he wasn't such a nice guy so he wouldn't be troubled with the daily stuggles Christians partake? And also because then he wouldn't be so curious and contemplative. He wonders what it is like to be with with God after death.
He knows there is a meaning to it all because he feels resureccted every time he falls. God is there for you even when you sin, no one is made perfect. "every blessing counts with a set of curses" He admits he has his sins and imperfections which he is admitting them in his verses. "I got my vices, I got my vice verses"
The wind could be my new obsession The wind can be my next depression The wind goes anywhere it wants to Wishing that I learned my lesson
The ocean sounds like a garage band Coming at me like a drunk man The ocean tells me a thousand stories None of them are lies
Let the blessed be glad Be all my epitaph With these rising and falling And after all, we're just water And I am just soul With a body of water and bones Water and bones
Where is God in the night sky? Where is God in the city light? Where is God in the earthquake? Where is God in the genocide?
Where are you in my broken heart? Everything seems to fall apart Everything feels rusted over Tell me that you're there
A little resurrection every time I fall This is an obvious reference to the lasting and continuing grace that Jesus gave to pay for our sins. And everytime he falls its as if its a little ressurection but Jesus said it was finished so all we have to do is repent everytime we fall. The Bible without the ressurection is just like any other book then. The ressurection is what seals the deal of all previous hopes and themes.

In response to Draken's comment, I think the line "Every blessing comes with a set of curses" means exactly what it says. In this world, nothing is perfect, and all the so-called good seems to be not completely satisfying. I like the line that says
Everything seems to fall apart Everything feels rusted over Tell me that you're there (God)
God is with us even in the world's imperfection.
One line that I don't understand is;
'Every blessing comes with a set of curses'
Is this true? How are we as Christians to understand this?
The way I understand it as a Christian, the blessings or the good times that God gives us are not "end-all" periods of infinite happiness. We live in a fallen world, a one corrupted by sin that wars agaisnt regeneration-- as long as we live by the Spirit, we will still feel the tension and pull of our opposite nature. Receiving and acknowledging the benefits of our union with Christ directly puts us at odds with the world.

I hope that sort of made sense :)

I believe he is referring to his "Vice Verses" causing the curses. In the song "Where I Belong" he says he wants to live his life like a song. His Vice Verses would probably the parts of his "song" where he messed up. In that line he probably means that for every blessing he gets, he messes up so much that a set of curses always comes to him too. That's my opinion

They've been playing this for awhile now. It's most likely gonna be the lead single on the cd after Hello Hurricane. Seeing as the cd is called Vice Verses.
Acctually Jon Foreman said there will probably be a cd before "Vice Verses" something like "Goodbye Hurricane".
nope. they have a christmas ep out though. it's called "eastern hymns for western shores" right now its only available if you buy their christmas package

This song is really beautiful, i'm very excited about the new album! for me, it's about how life is seldom what you plan, how everything rarely works out the way you want it to, we all wish that we could never make mistakes, that we could never wage wars and that there would be less pain and heartache everywhere in this world but in the end we must understand that things get better and that we might not always get what we want but in the end we always get what we need with god's gracious love.
in the twitter campaign on youtube, they were saying what there Vice Verses are. what are vices verses?

just heard the song but without over thinking it I think it means he has verses in the bible he goes to when the vices (weaknesses, faults, etc.) of life start to consume him

A "vice verses" usually means the reverse of something, a switch around. My understanding is his "Vice Verses" is Jesus, the Saviour that "reverses" all the pain that Jon's talking about in the song and making it beautiful again.

Personally I think that when he says "Every blessing comes with a set of curses" I think he means in his wrestling with life he feels like whenever good things happen that something bad always follows...

when he talks about falling and the resurrection the mistakes we make in life. i feel like he may have lost a child im not sure. we lost a child and its a blessing
and a curse. a lot of pain.
