Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't) Lyrics

I've fought it for a long time now
While drowning in a river of denial
I washed up, fixed up, picked up
All my broken things

'Cause you left me
Police tape, chalk line
Tequila shots in the dark
Scene of the crime
Suburban living with a feeling
That I'm giving up
Everything for you
(For you)

Oh, oh, oh
How was I supposed to know that you were
Oh, oh, over me?
I think that I should go
(Go!)
And something's telling me to leave, but I won't
'Cause I'm damned if I do ya
Damned if I don't

It took a lot to take you home
One stupid call and I end up alone
You're made up, dressed up
Messed up plans I set in stone

But you made me do
When I don't, like, dancing in the alley
With the streetrat night life
Can't keep living with a feeling
That I'm giving up
Everything for you
(For you)

Oh, oh, oh
How was I supposed to know that you were
Oh, oh, over me?
I think that I should go
(Go!)
And something's telling me to leave, but I won't
'Cause I'm damned if I do ya
Damned if I

Don't make a fool of myself
When you hang around
When you're gone
I'm a match that's burning out
Could have been, should have done
What I said I was going to do
(Said that I would do)
But I never promised you
(But I never promised you)
Promised you, promised you

Oh, oh, oh
How was I supposed to know that you were
Oh, oh, over me?
I think that I should go
(Go!)
It never took a fool
To see the things that I won't
'Cause I'm damned if I do ya
Damned if I do ya

Oh, oh, oh
('Cause you left me)
How was I supposed to know that you were
(Police tape, chalk line)
Oh, oh, over me?
(Tequila shots in the dark)
I think that I should go
(Scene of the crime)
And something's telling me to leave, but I won't
'Cause I'm damned if I do ya
Damned if I do
Damned if I do ya
Damned if I don't

everyone on here has a right to their own fucking opinion, people. and yes, a person can still consider themselves a fan of a band despite disliking one song, or even an entire album for that matter. alright, yes, im one of those "pretentious pricks" who loved them back in the put up or shut up days, was pretty disappointed by so wrong, and is now becoming revolted by this garbage. yes, i understand that a band changing their sound the slightest bit is not equivalent to selling out, but when a band used to actually make music that had some substance and feeling to it, and now has been reduced to making this cookie-cutter, ridiculous bullshit, obviously there are going to be old fans who are not happy. if there are people who like this, then that's great. and if the band's happy, then that's even greater. but with all that said, i think this song sucks, and im allowed to think that. same way youre allowed to think that it doesnt.

and because this is songmeanings - it's pretty obvious what this song is about; flaky relationship where neither of them are ever really happy ("damned if do ya, damned if i dont"); he puts everything in towards the relationship, and shes still disappointed. he makes plans, she blows them off, etc. but he still doesnt wanna quit and so they continue this insatiable cycle.

my interpretation may be off but i could only take one or two listens /looks at the lyrics.

For all the people whining about their new sound there's a lyric in one of Jay-Z's songs that's goes "if you want my old music buy my old album" or something like that. Anyway I think that rings true for All Time Low too. If u don't like their new stuff then listen to their old stuff. Complaining will get you nowhere :-)

i think it's... and you may be due but i dont like dancing in the alley

this was a great publicity stunt on there half =] releasing the song even though they prolly didn't want to but it definitely helped from my perspective.

[I fought it for a long time now While drowning in a river of denial] i think the song is about him really liking a girl even though he prolly shouldn't. [damned if i do ya]

And when he finally gets the chance she bails ['Cause you left me] [How was I supposed to know That you were oh, oh, over me?] [It took a lot to take you home One stupid call] So he knows that she doesn't truly care about him as much as he does with her.

So therefor this relationship which probably shouldn't be happening [damned if i do you]

but he's still attracted to her [damned if i don't]

In the end he regrets not trying harder [Could've been, should've done What I said I was going to (Said that I was going to) But I never promised you]

but throughout the entire thing he regrets even more giving into her and giving up what he has for love he already felt wouldnt happen [Can't keep living with a feeling That I'm giving up Everything for you]

yup. =]

i change my mind... kinda i think it may also be about there fans

how there damned if they stay in the music industry cause no matter what move they make they know they will either lose or win fans.[they can;t impress everyone]

but damned if they don't cause then they can't do what they love and there old fans will be upset that they stopped [like blink all over again]

...maybe?

Alright, I usually don't post comments on these things, but after reading all the bashing that some of the people on here are doing, I'm a bit pissed. Yes, they have changed their sound. They change their clothes everyday, you wannma get mad at them for that too? Are you going to decide to like them when they wear one outfit, but not the other? Just because they have a few songs you don't like, you shouldn't dislike them for it. They should try different sounds. It's called variety. I've liked them since "The Paty Scene" too, and I've watched them change their sound dramatically, and I'm okay with it. I love all the different sounds they've tried. That's what a real fan does. And no matter what, their sounds have always been catchy to me, and they've always been lyrical genius. Including this one. Just ebcause they've gone a bit more "poppy" and they ahve catchier songs, doesn't mean they've "sold out". I hate it. Why do people always decide to say that, once the band gets a little taste of fame? They want to make it big, isn't that what every band wants? And if all your going to do is wish them back to the nobodies that they used to be, you shouldn't call yourself a fan. Fans want the best for their bands.

My Opinion

I totally and completely agree. I'm glad you got out what I was thinking the whole time I was reading these comments. I am truly happy and excited for them, changing or not. I will always be a fan no matter what these guys do. they are an amazing band and deserve to make it big. Even if you hate it, atleast you know you've been a fan from the start. I know that's good enough for me. I have watched All Time Low grow as a band and I only want them to be happy in what they are...

Thanks for agreeing with me. I knew there was fans out there that did. And yes, I've pre-ordered it too, through Glamour Kills, I can't wait for it to come out :P. And yeah, I like the song too. I love it actually, I'm not going to say it's their best, cause I'd be lying. In my opinion, "Jasey Rae" will always be the best song to come outta All Time Low. That's just me though. Maybe Nothing Personal can change that. But thanks, I needed someone to have my back here :D

haha yeah I'm not gonna lie, jasey rae is definitely my second favorite song they've made. it's definitely a great one! six feet under the tars just never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I listen to it..definitely my favorite. And definitely I have no problem backing you up on this, or any true all time low fan. can't wait til the 7th!!!!

they did change their sound, but i still love them. they can do what the want.. who are we to say whether or not they've sold out. i did an article for my journalism class about selling out, and i hate the term. don't say that if people offered you a lot of money to live your dream you wouldn't do it. because anyone would.

oh and in response to rachelrenee or whatever, a "real fan" is allowed to criticize and dislike stuff, too. you dont have to mindlessly follow and adore every single thing a band puts out in order to be considered a "real fan." im not saying that youre not sincere in your claim that youve loved all of it, im just saying that disliking a song or two doesnt change considering someone to be a fan.

Alright, you can dislike stuff. And you can say to yourself "I'm not really a fan of this song, it's not what I used to hear from them, and it's not the kind of music that I like to listen too. That's fine. But deciding that they've sold out, and they aren't the same people (not saying you did that, I just know some people are saying that) isn't a correct asumption, off of a few songs that you might not like the sound of. But a real fan does support the band. In all it's musical endevors. It's like a...

by talking about the clothes they wear, xxRACHELRENEExx, you're automatically connecting being a fan to what they do OUTSIDE of the music! riddle me this: do you have to like them as people to be a true fan?

i just don't understand that logic. it's about the MUSIC.

Okay idk why all of you guys are being so mean about this song. Sure it's different that Put Up or Shut Up and So Wrong, It's Right but bands change their sounds as they mature that's all that Alex, Jack, Rian and Zack did! I personally like this song and Weightless. Sure it's different but I like it. Now since this is a song meaning site and not just a forum I'm actually going use this site for it's intended perpous.

I think this song is about a relationship gone wrong. He's damned if he makes her happy and damned if he doesn't. He makes plans for them to go on dates and she just messes them up. That's what I personally think this is about. Nothing personal (: if you don't agree.

well I really love this song and I think we all have our different opinions about it and we should respect that...

to me this song is about a guy whos really into his ex-girlfriend after she broke up with him and he keeps trying to get back with her but part of him knows she is not worth it but part of him wants to keep trying. he is aware that he makes the fooled of himself but he just cant let go

Not Valid

thats why he says "im damned if i do ya, damned if i dont" he feels that if he keeps trying he is making the wrong decision and if he decides to let go he is making the wrong decision too...

this is kinda confusing i know...

DEFINITELY NOT MORE MATURE. I feel like they were more mature when they started the band in eighth grade.

I can really relate to this song. My girlfriend recently broke up with me. :/ I think this song is about his girlfriend obviously stops loving him but all he wants is to have her back. He knows if he doesn't get her back he is going to hurt and be sad, and he knows if he does go back out with her there is still a chance that she will stop loving him again. Basically either way he is going to hurt like hell but he doesn't care. He just wants to be with her as long as he can. Thats my opinion anyways.

i absolutely love all time low and this song is good, so are most of their others so far i havent found a song from them that i dont like and i love the fact that they have almost no slow songs. you got to admit that fast songs are so much more fun to listen to and most of the time easier to dance to! :D

my friend hates all time low cause she thinks they write songs only about one night stands and that their music sux but i think that she is damn wrong!!!!!! :D

I think this song is about a secret relationship. (as the MV suggests) But also in the line "You made me do, when I dont like dancing in the alley with the street rat nightlife" Obviously the girl doesn't want anyone to know whats going on, but he likes her so everything they do is in private. Prehaps in this relationship he put more into it and made her a priority when he was just an option "Suburban feeling that I'm giving up, everything for you"

Maybe now, the girl has just given up on their relationship but since it was nothing serious [to her] she didn't really care about him "How was I supposed to know that you were over me" and now he has to move on with his life after coming to this realisation. "I think I should go" and "I've fought it for a long time now While drowning in a river of denial I washed up, fixed up, picked up All my broken things"

This song is amazing. It's like they hit the nail right on the head with this one.

ohh also that shes a liar

Your made up, dressed up Messed up plans I set in stone

She made plans, (prob. oh we'll be together forever stuff like that) and she messed them up (by leaving him). So what she said to him, he believed and he saw her in his future and truely beleived it but she messed those plans up.
