Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.
Time is running out as you die, die, die in this bed not making a sound.
It has all come crashing down to be here, and watch you breathe your last.
So helpless to stop you from slipping away so fast.
Oh, God, are you listening now?
As this cancer dances through her, and then takes a bow.
It won't disappoint the crowd,
whose words are a curse,
as I hear them one-by-one.
Please pull the string, and I come undone.
I know this. I failed to say. I'm sinking by your side.
You're worth this. I wouldn't trade a day to not have gone through this
So many days I've been blind.
I want to stop and rewind.
Kick off our shoes and dance with the ghost of you.
Who could tease me and leave me begging for the abuse?
You're the only I knew that could tame me, and make me who I am.
But now, there's self-blaming and there's nothing left of all my plans.
I know this. I failed to say. I'm sinking by your side.
You're worth this. I wouldn't trade a day to not have gone through this.
So many days I've been blind.
I want to stop and rewind.
Kick off our shoes and dance..
Let's dance again.
We'll turn up our sleeves.
I know just where to begin.
Dance, let's dance again.
We could find ourselves before this happens...
Words of mine are trite and simple shame.
Still we find a place in everything.
It's just to break the silence that has been crushing me.
Half of me is dead, already gone.
Half is screaming everyone is wrong.
Finally asking now, will you just hear me out?
This was all my fault.
You brought me death, and it's everything I wanted.
It's the wrong side of fear that kept me out.
It has all come crashing down to be here, and watch you breathe your last.
So helpless to stop you from slipping away so fast.
Oh, God, are you listening now?
As this cancer dances through her, and then takes a bow.
It won't disappoint the crowd,

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Holiday

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
It's definitely "I know this. I felt the same. I'm sinking by your side." Not "sleeping by your side."
What does he mean by "It's the wrong side of fear that kept me out."? its been bothering me ever since i listened to the whole cd cause it doesnt seem like a just ending to such a masterful album.
"Words of mine are trite and simple shame.
I may be completely 100% off here, but it's interesting...could this be about a huge fear of commitment to someone he loved, and him, although knowing it was an awful thought to think but thinking it anyway because of his huge fear (possibly of commitment), thinking something along the lines of, "Damn, if this girl would just die or something I wouldn't have to keep feeling this way, so scared and nervous and worried about the future." - I don't know, I know nothing about this song yet (first time hearing it today), but the ending leads me to think about this.
It's about a girl who's dying/dead and he would give anything to have more time with. He blames himself for not treasuring every day with her.
Well if I remember right, Josh said in an interview that the emotions from all their albums come from what they are dealing with in their life at the time. (like As Your Voice Fades being about Toby's grandmother Now I'm not sure the exact intentions of the song, except that it was all built around "This Night Will Be Mine" being sung in Spanish.
Like the last poster said, I get a similar feeling when listening to the song.
Some of the lyrics are wrong. I have the cd! Came yesterday and I love it! <33 The correct lyrics fit, what people have been saying above about the meaning, better. So here are the correct lyrics in booklet and I tried to set it out best, please change them thanks:
Time is running out, As you die die die in this bed not making a sound. It has all come crashing down, To be here, and watch you breathe your last. So helpless to stop you from slipping away so fast.
Oh God are you listening now? As this cancer dances through her and then takes a bow. It won't disappoint the crowd, Whose words, are a curse, As I hear them one by one. Each pull, the string, and I come undone.

Who could tease me and leave me begging for the abuse? You're the only I knew, That could tame me, and make me who I am. But now it's all fading, and there's nothing left of all my plans.

These words of mine are trite and so cliche, And still they find their place in everything. It's just to break the silence that has been crushing me. Half of me is dead, already gone. Half is screaming everyone is wrong. Finally asking now will you, Just hear me out?
This was all my fault. You brought me death, and it's everything I wanted. It's the wrong side of fear that kept me out.
Oops I missed a one out...above^^ 'You're the only one I knew'.
well, he got his wish...
esa noche fue suyo
To me, a song has a line or a verse that gives you a new look on things or gives a disription of something that you hadn't heard before. The line "As the cancer dances through her and then takes a bow. It wont disapoint the crowd," gives you a new take on a deadly and horrible condition. It makes you wonder. Anyhoo, I might be crazy, but that's just my take on it
I'm with jonneh_ on this one, i think thats a pretty damn good interpretation.
I saw Emery in concert right after this cd came out. Dear Death Part 2 was originally combined with Dear Death part 1 as one song. So to fully understand the song you have to take both parts into consideration. Toby said the motivation behind writing this song is a reoccurring dream he has about loosing his wife. This is just an interpretation of his dream and how he felt and what he saw. There is also a song about this dream on the latest cd "We Do What We Want"called The Curse of Perfect Days. The thought of loosing his wife is a great fear of Toby's and he makes if very evident in not one, but three of his songs.
