The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

When She says, "He opens a window just to feel the chill," well, that alone is a double meaning. He feels the chill of the outside air and he feels the chill of a cold life. "He hears that outside a small boy just started to cry," It sounds to me like the older boy is already in someone's house getting ready to steal, but he hears his brother outside and gets a chill because his bad decisions are now affecting his younger brother. And the pattern just goes on..and on...everyday..just screwing up...again..and again...Eet-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-eet-eet-eet. And once you're gone, you can't remember yourself..."It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song." It used to be easy for you to be yourself, but life got hard and you got lost and forgot who you were. And now that you are trying to move your feet and get back into that beat, you slip back into the pattern you created and it sucks. But the fact that, "his brother won't let him try," is a good thing because then he can't make the same mistakes as the older brother did...hmmm.
