Me in your own way
Colour my eyes
See what feelings I hide
No-one knows why
No one can forgive
Second thought
Why do I care?
I'll hide from subtleties while
I try to face my kind
And you call this feeling
It's not enough
Come again another day
Now that my world feels out of place
I'll follow you home
Wake me with a bottle 'cross the head
I'll sleep 'til it's over and I'm sober again
Safe
Well I don't feel so safe here
Imagine that everything's affected by a cause
In this game you call luck
(There's nowhere to go)
Well I don't feel so lucky, no
(Lie to yourself)
And just when I think I've worked it out
These pieces move and I'm back to the start
Wake me with a bottle 'cross the head
I'll sleep 'til it's over and I'm sober again
Hey
It's nothing that you'd understand
I promised you maybe
Always
Do you think it matters?
(Here I will stand)
Do you think at all?
(Here I will fall)
Do we complicate it?
(Organized recovery)
Do we know it all?
(I'll always go)
I don't want to
(Here I will stand)
I just have to
(Here I will fall)
I don't need it
(Organized recovery)
I just want it
(I'll always go)
And lay this troubled sinner
With a gun in your hand
Now you live for no-one
Knowing what you held in your arm
Wasted promise
Set in stone and blood
Hold your promise
Save your cheap remarks, just leave me here alone
Me in your own way
Colour my eyes
See what feelings I hide
No one can forgive

While travelling down the path to freedom, Simple Boy enters a depression due to his new worldview. those around him no longer understand him, and he risks further alienation should he not pretend to be one of the slaves. However, he finds the limited feelings and emotions of the slave to be too confining.
Being awake amongst millions of comatose people. Lots of people choose to escape back to the lull of unconsciousness. Simple Boy tries (I'll sleep till its over and I'm sober again), but he knows too much now. eventually, you wake back up and you're right where you used to be. Unfortunately, the more you learn about how the world works, the more you realize how little you truly know.
Thankfully, this depression doesn't last long, and Simple Boy decides to make a stand. He begins to write down his understanding (All I know), which will soon become his personal law.
@TobyTheSlave Um are you the Simple Boy? Great job figuring this out

@TobyTheSlave absolutely agree with your take, I had something to add while listening as well.

When reading over lyrics it made me question who the narrator was and who they were talking to, it doesn't seem like they're talking to someone external, so I thought maybe it was an interaction between the subconscious tendencies and the conscious self, but the title being Umbra, meaning Shadow, made me think it's probably addressing the shadow self. Just hard to tell when the shadow is talking and when the conscious self is talking, since you could look at it both ways in many...
Just hard to tell when the shadow is talking and when the conscious self is talking, since you could look at it both ways in many of the parts.
The earlier parts make me think it's the Shadow self speaking to the self, but when I look back at it I feel the opposite. Like this person is struggling to face other people, letting the shadow paint them and determine the lens through which they view the world. Course could argue it's the shadow being painted, but it makes more sense that the narrator is being affected by their inner conflictions and doubts, more than the other way around. Even saying, "well I dont feel so safe here..." alone in a room with themselves, with their darker elements tormenting them most likely in a depressive cycle.
The luck part could be either one, since the conscious, waking self could be saying their bad fortunes are based on luck and the shadow is saying...what if it wasn't luck? What if your actions and the actions of others had direct consequences that you are now experiencing. Essentially "wake and own up to your own mistakes." But the conscious self could be the one telling their inner self that, 'hey...stop telling me this is luck when I know better." I think it works both ways simultaneously. Maybe that's why it's so hard to figure out, because they're both the same person arguing with themselves at the end of the day.
Darker than the melancholy shadowing the House of Usher, more brooding, crestfallen, and agonizing in mood than the development of Reverend Dimmesdale, "Umbra" has a textural beauty about it that makes the song serene amidst the tenebrosity that constitutes its namesake. The boys of Karnivool adorn a tale of addiction and intervention with a superb arrangement which complements everything about it. There's such a grandoise build-up in the bridge, and the last stanza adds to its power. It'll strike you in the face and make you crave another listen (strange for a song hinting at a common vice). Once again, the song lends itself towards many interpretations, which I love. Especially in a song about addiction, "Umbra" has the potential to be identifiable to those experiencing lows with whatever demon they are battling. That is something the Vool boys should take pride in. What a modern-fucking-masterpiece...
now that my world feels out of place ** ? maybe
I think this song is about someone entering a depression either due to life stress in general, how messed up the world has become around them or chronic illness / pain and his depression has made him feel isolated from everyone else around him. He becomes so aware of his alienation that he can't seem to find a way out. An umbra is a shade or shadow, and this person feels like hey have a big dark cloud hanging over them they can't get out from under. (Wake me with a bottle 'cross the head I'll sleep 'til it's over and I'm sober again) this is the person begging for someone to help them out from under the umbra they are stuck beneath. All they know is depression and suffering and all they can seek now is a map or a plan of action to release them from their personal hell.
This song screams depression, the word umbra can mean shadow world, a region of shadow, many things, but always shadow is the common factor. The singer is confused and just feels like giving up, lyrics such as "No one knows why, no one can forgive, Second thought, why do I care" and "Hey, it's nothing that you'd understand" and talk about sleeping till sober again. Constant contradictory and negative lyrics imply that the singer doesn't believe anything is working and this is shown again by the lyrics "And just when I think I've worked it out, These pieces move and I'm back to the start"
Does anyone else think that "(organised recovery)" sounds like it could be "(Don't ask me probably)". The question in the lyrics is "Do we complicate it" and is then answered by "Don't ask me probably" which in turn completely answers the question... I wondered this when I saw them live this year and heard the backing vocals. Ive always heard it as that. Just wanted to see what your thoughts are?
"Now that my world feels out of place" instead "Now that my world feels at least"
it is "now that my world feels out of place" he says it like "now that my world feels outa place" so it sounds like at least but its not that.
