Where My Mouth Is Lyrics

see, it's not like i didn't mean what i said
when i said "i'll put my money where my mouth is"
and i put my money where my mouth was
until i couldn't breathe through my nose
and now i'm starring at the floor
where my second life just ended,
where i lost not one, but two friends.

yeah, i had it all
sitting on top of the world
but i threw it away.
just to prove that i could,
i put my money where my mouth is

see, i recall quite perfectly who i was
both before and after the drugs
both before and after the drugs

i put my money where my mouth is
i put my money where my mouth was
i got a strong will, just weak hands
and i don't know what to do
with either one of them

yeah, i had it all
sitting on top of the world
but i threw it away.
just to prove that i could,
just to prove that i could,
i put my money where my mouth is
i put my money where my mouth is
i put my money where my mouth is

your knight in shining armor
of a mother and a father,
you had everything
everything you needed
and it was made crystal clear
that would not change

yeah, i had it all
sitting on top of the world
but i threw it away.
just to prove that i could,
yeah, i had it all
yeah i had it good, so good
but i threw it away.
just to prove that i could,

i put my money where my mouth is
i put my money where my mouth is
i put my money where my mouth is

yeah, i had it all.

I think this is something much more deeper than drugs. I think the drugs are a simple metaphor for a girl or woman. I think it is about him having a girl who loved him and was addicted to him and he just decided to end it because "he knew that he could". This CD is growing on me more and more every day.

I agree with todoublem on the fact that it could be a girl. But it also could be drugs....idk its all perspective i guess. Whatever it is, he obviously is reflecting and regrets the decision of "throwing it away just to prove that he could". I also agree with todoublem with the cd growning on me. I have to admit that i was on the fence about their new sound at first but im falling in love with it more and more everyday. TBS is just plain awesome =)

the album was mostly about his divorce, i read that somewhere or saw it in an interview. i can't remember which.

this song meaning is alot deeper than cocaine, if thats even what its about at all. Sounds like someone is feeling remorse for themselves and things they have thrown away, and perhaps they are doing it inspite of someone else who they compare themselves too who look down on them...

I think it is deeper than drugs but at the same time it is about drugs. And I don't think it's cocaine unless he's talking about smoking it ala "I put my money where my mouth is". Maybe the new crack - crystal meth - or it could be anything even drinking, though he specifically says drugs. But on top of th meaning "I put my money where my mouth is" I think he also means what the saying is intended to mean in the beginning.

@MRJawbreakingEquilibrium- the drug referenced in the song is cocaine...."until i couldn't breathe through my nose." but who cares what drug he was using, the important thing about this song was how he reflects on his decision to abuse drugs and push his friends away just to prove a point. i think he realizes that he had the world in the palm of his hands, and he let it slip through the cracks of his fingers.

Its funny how some people are still stuck on TAYF. Its obvious that the sound of that album is a) one of a kind, and b) never going to happen again. This album is a huge push forward for TBS's sound. I think that it will definitely be one of the few albums that will frequent my cd player/ipod/computer this summer. Props to TBS for not dwelling on past successes and evolving.

My Opinion

i agree with you. "we used to be this dying breed" (a decade under the influence). tell all your friends is soooo unique but that incarnation of tbs happened once and wont happen again, however, all five of those guys are still doing music and most of it is pretty rad. the new taking back sunday album is very good. the more i listen to it the more i like it

yeah maybe it has to do with drugs, i think it blatantly says that whatever he did was affected by drugs in one way or another. to me, it is also clear that this song is about losing John N and Fred M. Perhaps the 'money where my mouth is' line is referring to his(Adam's) belief that he could do it without them..and now he is realizing that maybe he can't. i only think this because ive always had an image of adam in my head thinking he was alot better than he really was..and now he's lost two of his closest friends and best songwriters/guitarists because of his arrogance. but who knows..thats just what i get from the song.

Yeah, I agree, I really think it's about losing John and Fred with the line "lost not one, but two friends". And about his arrogance and stubborness driving them out of the band.

i totally agree...from the line "lost not one, but two friends". and when he says "i had it all, sitting on top of the world, but then i threw it away" i think he means that the band was so amazing then but now they lost friends as well as fans

"where i lost not one, but two friends" i think its about john nolan and shaun cooper. maybe adam is apologizing. for years straylight run and tbs have been throwing punches at each other and i think this may be the first time anyone of them has apologized. i dont think it has anything to do with fred because capital ME and summer man are clearly bashing him and i dont think adam would bash and apologize on the same cd

I think so too!

I agree with most of what is said. I believe the song is apologizing to John and Shaun, because at the time Adam had the big ego and figured he could do it alone without them. And i was thinking the drug comment was a direct like to drugs, but like "todoublem" said, the drug reference could be talking about a girl. And i'm believing the girl was Michelle, which was one of the reasons everything in the band blew up in the first place. So to sum it up, the relationship with Michelle and the ego saying he doesnt need John and Shaun. Adam is just saying sorry for it all.

About time he apologizes! :P

I think that this is one of the most straightforward songs Adam has ever written.

"and i put my money where my mouth was until i couldn't breathe through my nose"

i think that clearly shows that it does have to do with drugs. my interpretation was that the drugs are what changed him and made him lose the friends so of course it's not JUST about drugs but he seems to be saying in plain english that drugs changed him and messed up his life.
