I think it is about being deeply in love and still remaining true to yourself.
Jeff Tweedy has stated in several interviews (SPIN, Rolling Stone, etc...) that this song is about two lovers trying to keep a relationship together.
I think this song is actually about 2 people who don't really have as much a relationship per say, as some sort of deeper friendship that they cannot/will not turn into something else. - "I think we can take it All the good with the bad Make something that no one else has"
"We might be strangers How ever close we get sometimes Its like we never met" - it's like however they feel for each other, they never really make it "official" - they might as well be strangers.
I also believe the lyrics imply that one of them feels more than he lets the other know - "I can't ever tell you're The deepest well I've ever fallen into" - for fear that the indefinite relationship that they do have will be put to an end.
That's my two cents
That is the best description I've read. I completely agree, because I'm in this situation. And it is certainly how it feels.

____ i like how Jeff says he doesn't need or want to know anything about her, and that really she doesn't need to know that much about him. they like each other, they have something special, isn't that enough? allowing yourself to be yourself while in a relationship, and allowing the other person to be himself or herself in your relationship. that's an art.
This is not about a relationship or marriage. It is about two people who clearly have feelings for one another, but the hesitancy of either both or one of them causes this beauty they share to never be taken deeper or made official. It is like a friendship that s scared to be taken closer, when deep down both of them want t be so much closer. It seems as if one of them will not admit how much they care for the other, because it is supposedly just a friendship. It seems as though the pair is happy for what they both can share on those special random moments, but deep down they would be happier just being together. They might as well be strangers, because they will pour out their hearts and souls to one another during those special rare moments, but then after it happens and around the expectations of humanity and society they will just smile and wave at each other as if they are just friendly acquaintances or close "strangers". If they could meet again for the first time again maybe things would be different, but now they are trapped in a weird situation. And maybe it will work someday, but time will have to tell. They do not know everything about each other, they have not known each other long, but they understand each other infinitely better than others do, making them feel as if they have known one another for years. It is one of those rather beautiful blessings in life, as well as something that torments the soul, because you continuously want the person so much closer to your heart.
I think this song is about maybe falling in love a second time. The people in the song may have had previous relationship and baggage, done things to hurt people they have love that that they regret. But the message in the song is that this should not be something that new loves dwells upon and gets in the way of the their new relationship. Part of them might always be strangers, but by not focusing on the past or their previous lives it might be possible to create something great, something that nobody else has.
It’s a very positive song, very mature almost, there is no rules in love that say if you have divorced or if you have had a bad break up does not mean you can’t love again. Myabe to take this further - how many songs have Feist and Wilco wrote about break up? It does not mean they have given up on it!
To me this song is about a couple that is close, dare I say in love even. And they know one another very well but they have things in there past that they don't tell each other or ask one another about. "You don't need to know that much about me", Let lying dogs lie. With that though I believe it may also show that they are strangers. That they don't know everything about each other. This causes maybe misconstrued words due to insecurities because of their pasts.
"But you and I I think we can take it All the good with the bad Make something that no one else has"
Despite it how ever LOVE concurs all
<3
Somehow I think this song is about getting married.
I agree with Fallingslowly that it is about being deeply in love and remaining true to yourself. "You and I.. make something that no one else has". When you are in love it is painful denying that feeling.
"I won't guess What's coming next I can't ever tell You're the deepest well I've ever fallen into" **Those are the correct lyrics and they are amazing.
Yeah I agree. :)
