We belonged to a bird
Who cast his shadow on this world
You were a blessing and I was a curse
I did my best not to make things worse, for you
It isn't true
I always knew this would be our fate
This is what happens when we separate
This is what happens to all dead weight, eventually
We may as well be made of stone
We can't be formed
One Wing will never fly
Neither yours nor mine
I fear we can only wave goodbye
One wing will never ever fly
Neither yours nor mine
I fear we can only wave goodbye
One wing will never ever fly dear
Nether yours nor mine
I fear we can only wave goodbye
Who cast his shadow on this world
You were a blessing and I was a curse
I did my best not to make things worse, for you
It isn't true
This is what happens when we separate
This is what happens to all dead weight, eventually
We can't be formed
Neither yours nor mine
I fear we can only wave goodbye
Neither yours nor mine
I fear we can only wave goodbye
Nether yours nor mine
I fear we can only wave goodbye

those are the correct lyrics :)
I believe this (phenomenal) song alludes to a possible crumbling dichotomy of American Democracy and capitalism. Maybe Wilco is not political and I am reading too much into the song... To me, it is perfectly reasonable.
We once belonged to a bird
And the beat goes on. observe the rest of the song and, with your own perspective, digest it yourself. All this babble is what I see with my mind's eye... and it's honest with me. All this aside, I completely agree with "carrot rope jive" as this ad bull black nova are the two most epic songs on the album. Hands down. Hands back up... okay... hands back down.
He tried to satisfy his mate by doing what she wanted or copying her. Thus, they acted as one instead of as a pair. While this unity is often held up as an ideal to which a couple should aspire, being too close can cripple as relationship. The metaphor of a bird being unable to fly with only one wing illustrates the point that two distinct, complementary and even sometimes opposing, individuals are necessary for a relationship to take off.
favorite song on the new album <3
I don't think they should've put the two most epic songs back-to-back on the new album. I like all the other songs but it just seems like this one and bull black nova stand out to me more than others. And that's not normally what people want to expect from a Wilco album... Of course, all of their albums require a little more listening to really appreciate, I guess
My interpretation of this song is that to be happy, to be free, to be successful, you need somebody. The other half of your body, of your soul. From what I get, he's saying that he know's that his other half, or "wing", is out there somewhere, but you're not who it is. I's kind of like a breakup song. I have way more to add to this, and to back up my point, but I'm supposed to be doing homework right now
