The Mess I Made Lyrics

Should've kissed you there
I should've held your face
I should've watched those eyes
Instead of run in place

I should've called you out
I should've said your name
I should've turned around
I should've looked again

But oh, I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
As you turn, you take your heart and walk away

Should've held my ground
I could've been redeemed
For every second chance
That changed its mind on me

I should've spoken up
I should've proudly claimed
That oh my head's to blame
For my hearts mistakes

But oh, I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
As you turn, you take your heart and walk away

And it's you
And it's you
And it's you
And it's you

And it's falling down
As you walk away
And it's on me now
As you go

But oh, I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
As you turn, you take your heart and walk away

And it's falling down
As you walk away
And it's on me now
As you go

But oh, I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
I'm staring at the mess I made
As you turn, you take your heart and walk away

It's about a guy who is so in love with this girl but he doesn't have the courage to make a move or tell her how he feels, and now she starting leave.

the singer said he wrote this song as an apology. but i agree with the others. he missed his chance at something great by making a mistake and now he can't help but think about her over and over and think about the mess he made

I think it could be anything that you all have said, but I think the song is about a guy that continuously hurts the same girl over and over again, not realizing what he was doing. and when he finally realizes, she's too hurt so she walks away, and he sees the "mess he made" her and he wishes he could have one more chance, to kiss her and hold her fac because she's the one for him and he realizes how good he had it, so now she's gone for good and it's all his fault.

I agree with steelersfan034, but that doesn't explain the "staring at the mess i made" part...I think the guy has regrets about a relationship with a girl and she's leaving him. After she's gone he's staring at the mess he's made.

I agree with steelersfan034; I think the "staring at the mess i made" is the situation. Like, he really likes the girl, but can't tell her and eventually she gets tired of waiting and "takes her heart away", and now he's like, eff, I missed my chance. It could be a mix of both...maybe he wasn't open enough in a relationship like she needed...whatever it is, it's one of my favorites on the album, if not my #1. So good!

ok. i believe this song is about a guy who made a mistake and he regrets it because he figured out that he was in love with the girl. so now he has this big mess that he has to live with

I think it could be either of those things. He could have written it for someone he let go (I shouldve said you're name) because he never took that chance (I should've held my ground). "Staring at the mess I made" could be his leftover life. The aftermath of realising he let her go, and she isn't going to come back.

Or

He could be talking about something he screwed up on. He had a great girl, who he thought he loved, but he did something dumb, and that dumb thing is what led him to realise he really does love this girl but that It's too late. The mistake was too large (It's falling down as you walk away) and he's left to live with what he's done.

My Interpretation

He is in a casual relationship with a girl who wanted more and he didn't give it to her so now she is walking away.... what a mess he made.

I think it's about a guy who regrets not telling the girl how he feels and because of it she's gone and now he's a mess.

My Interpretation

She is the mess he made, he's looking at her hence the "And it's you" repeating lines. I think it's pretty obvious that Will cheated or came close to it judging by the "Should've held my ground" piece. All of the things he should have done (looked again), ie. thought about the decision more before he gave into it. In the end, nothing he can do will ever make up for it and the girl wisely took her heart and walked away.

I think this song is about the last few moments he saw this girl... He hurt her and made her a mess. And he only realizes this in her leaving... So imagine him just looking into his girl's eyes, and wishing he could kiss her, and hold her face, and called after her when she left, but instead he just stares at this mess he made (her) as she walks away for the last time. Hope my boyfriend listens to this song soon.
