Set Fire To The Hive Lyrics
I don't know what's wrong, but I'm on fire
It sits in my hand, leaving skin on the wire
Awake in this world, where the crowd shouts down
When I listen the same crowd plays hard
We're slaves
In this medicated cage
Make a decision and face this
change
To rules they don't explain
So why do we obey?
Politics, religion, your vision's the same
You played us as both a cancer and a cure
Which reminds me that it's just a game
Your alibi's a sales pitch
Your pretty-boy, pretty-face
dolled up again
A star for us to adore
And you man you've got to be more
Cause this affects all
It's nice to know you're with us, today
I've seen you in the fog along the way
I'll spit in the mouth of your god
Who whispers in the minds of the children
You've been sold again
Set fire to the hive as you flee
It's fiction and faceless illusion
You've been had again
You swing this wrecking ball
A violent pendulum
To hypnotise them all
The writing on the wall
That we keep missing
A structure built to fall
Still we all obey
It's nice to know you're with us, today
I've seen you in the fog along the way
I'll spit in the mouth of your god
Who whispers in the minds of the children
You've been sold again
Set fire to the hive as you flee
It's fiction and faceless illusion
You've been had again
There's no second chances here
There's no second chances here
There's no second chances here
It sits in my hand, leaving skin on the wire

Simple Boy now has a worldview, which he explains to the semi-awake (fog) person he's now encountered.
No longer does he choose to adhere to the acts, statutes, and codes of his enslavers. Simple Boy has learned that the entire world (Politics/Religion) is just a game. and he can unplug the cartridge and play a different game should he wishes. He has no answer for why everyone obeys the rules, especially because nobody actually explains the rules.
The God of this game convinces his children that they're slaves, and informs them that they've been sold again. The video for this song makes it very clear that the God they're referring to is the same God in NIN's "Capital G" (GAOTU - "Great Architect of The Universe" of Freemasonry).
Simple Boy's solution is, therefore, to leave the prison, and suggests destroying it while you leave. the prison is fiction, a faceless illusion (every country on earth is merely a Corporation - a fictional stack of papers). until you leave it, you will continue to be sold and deceived.
Almost every line has some sort of religious reference: "Awake in this womb with a crown stinging my self" - Jesus in the womb with his crown of thorns... "The rules they don't explain, so why do we obey?" - Religion (particularly Christianity) is full of rules that have no logical reasoning to them. Ian is asking why people would follow so blindly. "A star for us to adore" - Christianity, Judaism, Ancient greek, roman and egyptian religions are all Sun cults, idolising our star Sol as a God. "I spit in the mouth of your God, who whispers in the minds of the children you've been sold again" - Clearly a "Fuck You" message to institutional religion who feeds off parents 'selling' their children to the church who are then inducted into the religion before they are old enough to thing for themselves and as a result follow blindly without thought. "Set fire to the Hive as you flee" - A message to those who have escaped religions grasp telling them to tear down religious ideology as they leave it's midst so as to help others escape. "It's fiction, a faceless illusion" - religion is fiction... no further explanation needed. Regardless of what priests and rabies tell us, there has never been a physical 'face' to the belief that they spew. You've been had again" - Religion is a trick, just like any other con. "You swing this wrecking ball, A violent pendulum, To hypnotize them all." - A reference to Holy war, Jihad. Religion hypnotises it's followers into hating people outside it's midst causing terror and destruction in the name of a lie. The music video's depiction of Pyramids also suports the religion hypothesis as the pyramids are a religious symbol of the Ancient Egyptians and more recently Catholicism (Four sided pyramids can be found all over the Vatican).
@FroWill I agree completely. Great summary.

These two lines just sum up this whole song.
"I'll spit in the mouth of the god Who whispers in the minds of the children"
this is just purely brilliant.
The meaning is pretty obvious, its about the corruption of governments and the peoples' inaction due the brainwashing propaganda making them docile "We're slaves In this medicated cage"
"Your pretty-boy, pretty-face dolled up again A star for us to adore" I think is about the selling of the new leaders (esp. Obama) as a person who promises change for the better but only has face value. "the writing on the wall" is all the signs of the government being corrupt but the people overlook it.
The guitarist wore a truth movement T shirt at the last gig of theirs I went to. After looking up the Truth Movement my perspectives on a lot of things have changed dramatically.
nice interpretation...I think this song is also about the destructive power of religion and how even in this day and age it still runs people's lives. "you swing this wrecking ball, a violent pendulum to hypnotise them all." lyrical genius right there. I think the pretty boy pretty faced line could also be interpreted as the way all organised religion has a poster boy...but in the end its all "fiction and faceless illusion."

I highly doubt a bunch of Aussie blokes from Perth would write such a deep song about american politics. We have our own retards in power to write songs about.

"I don't know what's wrong but I'm on fire Its changin in my hands, leavin skin on wire Awake in this world, in a cruel jail cell When I listen, the same law plays on" I think its a play on words, an analogy of the prisoner trying to break out of an unfair jail cell like world that only a few are aprivy to.
"We're slaves in this medicated cage," Obviously referring to all the drugs and other brainwashing techniques eg tv hypnosis, media billboards subliminal advertising etc. but also referring to our slavery to money and the bankers who keep us and the government in debt to them until they own everything through interest and inflation, which is all subject to the amount of money in circulation which is controlled by the big bankers.
"Make a decision to face this change To rules they don't explain So why do we obey?" Frustration at the blind masses for obeying without question the laws that are being placed down before them by the government (who are controlled by the bankers and global corperates). WHEN the GOV. is meant to be listening to ITS PEOPLE, and asking before acting. "Politics, religion, your vision's the same You played us, as both a cancer and a cure Which reminds me that it's just a game" Politics and Religion both keep the public from knowing who the real power in the world is, they also give us the illusion of choice because all of the major religions have been crafted into obedient slave institutions and have strayed from their true paths as Soul saviours. I'd keep going but I cant be bothered. I hope this helps anyone. Peace and blessings
The video clip for the song is chock full of symbolism.
The public as worker bees for the queen.
The "hive"/"structure built to fall" as a pyramid, referring to the ancient Egyptian dictatorship of the Pharoah and the enforcement of slave labor - "a structure built to fall/still we all obey"
'I'll spit in the mouth of your god Who whispers in the minds of the children You've been sold again"
I read this as a HUGE "Fuck You!" to the catholic church over their priestly abuse of children.
The whole song is about the falsehood of politics and religion, and the necessity to reject it all as garbage, getting rid of it as we leave it.
I really do not think that this song has much to do with religion, definitely not anything to do with the sexual abuse that has come from priests... Definitely a political statement; that the masses blindly follow political leaders without questioning their lies. This is obviously why they get elected in the first place... "Your pretty-boy, pretty-face dolled up again A star for us to adore" cant help but bring about thoughts in my mind of Obama, as he has spent more time becoming the worlds biggest celebrity and sweet talking the masses to convince them that what he is doing is whats good for them. This is the political "game" I think; getting elected. However he ought to be doing more as his decisions arent just a game to the people who are effected by them.
Basically I think its asking the masses to wake up, similar to Goliath, and realize the system that they are perpetrating but do not seem to see even though its staring them in the face.
No offence, by all mean you can take what ever personal meaning you want from it but from the bands perspective this song is most DEFINITLY about religion.

I'm not saying that the song doesn't touch on politics, by all mean, religion is in it's own right a form of politics, just simply without the democracy. That is the 'Game' Ian speaks of, the game of power over the mind between free-thinkers and the monarchical religion.
If you've listen to the whole Sound Awake album, you will realise that EVERY song is in someway about the tierney of religion and it's inevitable downfall, why would this one (so full of references) be about politics?
Also, in the incredibly unlikely case that I am completely wrong and this song is about politics, I highly doubt a bunch of Aussie blokes from Perth would write such a deep song about american politics. We have our own retards in power to write songs about.
It is about religion BUT it is referring to politics as well. It is a song against institutionalized drone mentality. Many idealogies incorporate religion with politics, though it's not always as simple as 'if you are Christian then you are a conservative and vice versa (I actually know a highly conservative atheist and I was a liberal Christian for brief period of time.) It is a 'Fuck the System' message. Both parties do it, it's not just Obama-it's all part of a political game that our politicians play to fool the sheep. Truth is that the two parties may differ...

@TheFifthHorseman I think the duel meaning is pretty obvious given the lines: "Politics, religion, your vision's the same You played us, as both a cancer and a cure".

You could probably summarize the entire song with those 2 lines (for the most part).

This is my best guess, I'm certain plenty of it is wrong, feel free to help out if you know them
