Pirate Blues Lyrics
Before you, your mom and your dad
Used to smoke in the Texas sun
They were young once too
And your mom, she found Jesus
While your old man stepped out and drew up his veins
It's quiet in the house of the old
You can hear through grinding teeth, clocks taking their toll.
'Cause time has a mind of its own
Like our sun spinning around
It won't slow for you now
Oh, I wanna catch in a song
Notes I don't hear yet
But I will when I'm gone
I've been pouring my heart up
Up through the floorboards
But you don't live here anymore
Oh, you wanna catch in a lens
Color your green eyes don't see just yet
The horse men
They all blow out their torches
I can see you still shining out
But you sleep in a bed for a giant
While you wait for your love to come home
But you don't know, she's not coming back
Oh, I wanna find out I'm wrong
And every road leads us home
Oh, but I'll never know, 'cause i keep my eyes closed
And only go where I've been before
Oh, say you don't know, if you don't
Used to smoke in the Texas sun
They were young once too
And your mom, she found Jesus
While your old man stepped out and drew up his veins
You can hear through grinding teeth, clocks taking their toll.
'Cause time has a mind of its own
Like our sun spinning around
It won't slow for you now

Up through the floorboards

And every road leads us home
Oh, but I'll never know, 'cause i keep my eyes closed
And only go where I've been before

Otherwise very good, I had no idea what he was saying right at the end
"clocks taking their toll."
this song is so cool.
This song is just wonderful. :D
i think the song is about his parents. it reminds me of the song The Widow from their first cd.. about his dad leaving before him and his brother were born.
In the linear notes there's a part near the end of the lyrics that says "hail evil." Not sure why it's there, but it is. Joke, maybe? Anyone else notice? Kinda weird.
I believe that in general he is lamenting that his dad will not be in heaven with him, the first verse is an introduction where he says his mom found religion and his dad left and continued to do drugs, the second verse is about how everybody gets old and dies eventually, third verse talking about making beautiful heavenly music but he can't yet because he hasn't gone to heaven, fourth I'm making a guess that he is talking to his dad. Fifth is the same as the third, no clue about the sixth, the seventh he seems to be hoping that he is wrong and that christianity isn't the only way to heaven so his dad could be there.
I'm an atheist, I listen to ACB because the angst he feels about his faith is kind of amusing to me and I love the music itself.
so your saying that your athiest. you dont believe in a single god? you believe you are just here correct? but you find his faith. just through his music he is so strong through it and you can just tell he really loves what he means.. in no way right now or ever am i gonna tell you to believe in a god because how can myself know there is one. i just want to know what you are thinking i guess.

I've been pouring my heart up, up through the floor boards, but you don't live here anymore.
i dont know about the other verses but that part is definately about when he lived in 1st street studios and he always played music for this girl he loved like crazy who lived on the upper floor but doesnt hear him its like our most historic area where i live ha
I think that parts of this song might be about looking forward to our new bodies in Heaven.
"Oh I wanna catch in a song, Notes I dont hear yet. But I will when I'm gone."
Some people think that in Heaven, when our bodies are restored to their initial ability, our senses will be far better than they currently are. For example, some animals can hear very high pitch sounds that we can't, and some can hear very low pitch sounds that we can't. So, it is thought that in Heaven, we too will be able to hear a much larger 'range' of sound that Adam and Eve were probably capable of hearing when they were created, but due to the effects of sin in the world, we lost this ability. So Cody is saying that he wants to hear these "notes" that he is incapable of hearing while on Earth, but he will be able to hear them "when [he's] gone" from Earth and in Heaven/The New Earth.
"Oh you wanna catch in a lens, Color your green eyes don't see just yet."
This is the same concept, but applies to our vision - that is, our eyesight will be much better when our bodies are restored and we will be bale to see colour that our eyes "don't see just yet."
