Where Was God?

There she lays
Asleep in her bed
Dreams of gumdrops and carousels
Dance in her head

Then the door
Opens a crack,
An all-too-familiar face
Turns her on her back

Where was God
When the angels cried?
Where was God
When the flowers died?

He says "It’s all right,"
And "Don’t make a sound."
She folds her hands and starts to pray
God’s nowhere around

Another night
Another dream
Another tear falls down her face
The same ol’ scream
