Tear Garden Lyrics

I saw bright open common sense,
I do evil things and evil things return,
and I'm praying on, I'm praying for me.
You can't hide, I remove from you every
tiny strength in everything you do.

I kick you down,
I'll break you with a tender touch,
And then the tears cried in the tear garden,
Will be for life.
And then the tears cried in the tear garden,
Will be for life.

In the west they have made a plague,
We have built the ship, sailed it to our veins,
Don't think anything will break that chain.

At our road, we connected through,
The biology of universal cruelty,
Send me home, return me to a lonely world.

And then the tears cried in the tear garden,
Will be for life,
And then the tears cried in the tear garden,
Will be for life.

This song is a little bit of a play on words with german.

'Tier' is german for animal, which sounds like tear. 'Tiergarten' is german for Zoo (animal garden)

So, This song is about animals, and zoos, being trapped etc.

The imagery is quite clear: 'Break chains' 'animals crying in zoo' 'a biology'

It all makes sense! - The video has animals in it too.

Hope this helps.

Song Meaning

wiicorner is right!

Chris Corner is a 'fan' of Austria and told nearly the same in an interview at the austrian radio-station 'FM4'. He said; one day he read a sign in Vienna that leads to the 'Tiergarten' and associate this with 'teargarden', so he got sad about the imagination that such a place could exist...

To extend a little further on what wiicorner and Waveshaper have said (even if it was not, perhaps, in Corner's intentions), there was a zoo in early 20th century Germany known as the 'Tierpark Hagenbeck', which was started by Carl Hagenbeck Jr. Following the footsteps of his father's work, he revolutionized such 'tiergartens' by using moats instead of barred fences, so he could create visual panoramas of several sorts of animals living in 'harmony', when really, they were still seperate from eachother. He also held lucrative human zoos.

I feel the lyrics reflect upon zoos in general, though -- it's especially obvious in the second verse:

' You can't hide I remove from you Every tiny strength in everything you do And I'll kick you down I'll break you with a tender touch '

Zoo animals can't hide. Their 'tiny strengths' are all the things they live for; their instincts to hunt, kill and survive are taken away from them, and they are broken by the 'tender touch' of domestication.

It's really a very potent song.
