Been Down Lyrics
I dreamt you seduced me just to walk away
I dreamt you inspired then rewired what I say
I dreamt you spread your bottom wings and pulled me to the bed
But then I woke up feeling nauseous you danced around my head …tell me
How long, how long, have I been down?
How long, how long, have I been down?
How long, how long, have I been, down, down, down?
I dreamt you burned my fingers yes an automatic sting
I dreamt you called me beautiful then asked to hear me sing
I dreamt your scent invited me to crawl within your space
But then I woke up feeling nauseous girl you danced around my face…tell me
How long, how long, have you been down?
How long, how long, have you been down?
How long, how long, have you been, down, down, down?
And why can’t we work when we both try?
We try, we try, we try, we try
And why can’t this work when we both try
And why can’t it work when we both try?
We try, we try, we try, we try,
Oh how we try
And how we tried
I meant to sympathize
I meant to be a friend
I know apologizing wont erase the end
But I learn moving on is where I must began
Cuz when our colors mixed we couldn’t fix the way they wouldn’t blend…so tell me
How long, how long, have we been down?
How long, how long, have we been down?
How long, how long, have we been, down, down, down?
Yeah and I wish that only greatness fallow you around
I hope to god you find a way to keep from down
And when you do I hope you share it all with me
Please try to understand, yeah to understand…me, just try to understand me, yeah understand me
How long how long have we been down, down, down…yeah
I dreamt you inspired then rewired what I say

From Justin Himself:
"This was written quite awhile ago. This was actually Ryan's favorite song awhile back, way back when. We were recording in San Marcos in like '98, '99. It's just a story of two people who can't seem to get it write, even though they love...or obsess...over each other. Or infatuation. There's a difference between all three of those. And there's lust. Mmmm...ah, lust is amazing. But it's about wanting to love someone, wanting to be with them so bad, wanting to make it work so bad, but the more you make it work, the more you beat your head against the wall, so you wish em well. That's all you can do, wish em well, and you go the other way. I know everybody's been in this situation before. And you didn't wanna hurt them, cause you still love them, but you just don't get along ... it's like oil and water, trying to mix. And then oil decides to write a song about it. That's it. Been Down's about a relationship that's so important to two people yet they can't get it right. It's like saying "I hate you - don't leave me!"
For some reason, it reminds me of my current relationship
This song is my favorite, because it tells the story of two people that no matter how much they love each other...it just wont work. And one of them realizes that its putting them both in a bad space with the way they feel. One shows alot of courage knowing that its time to walk away, even wishing good things for the person they are leaving. Lyrics take you to that place where you can witness life being played out right in front of you.

Wow, reading that again, after my previous relationship is over, it seems EXACTLY like my old relationship. We both cared for each other so much, but it was just lust. We hated most of what the other liked, but we tried to make it work, in the end she cheated on me, but alas, a lesson was learned. I love this song.
to me, both partners in this relationship are individually struggling.
cleche idium: "you cannot love another until you love yourself"
i belive that this is what justin is reacting too. both people are dealing with depression or some ultimate saddness and want to be in love because they believe that this other person can make them happy, can lift them up (how long have we been down?) to a happy sort of normal. with this come the disappointment when each is proven wrong through unfaltering dispair.
believe to
Justin is a genius.

You think justing wrote his own lyrics?

He writes all his music. Granted I'm sure the band helps, but overall he does the majority of the songs, including this one.

I am going thru this now with a special woman who is not my wife. Our struggle is not unusual. She is perhaps a soul mate, but I am not sure if I am in love or in love with the concept of being in love. I fear this is going to end badly for everyone....but its like a train wreck you can't turn away from watching.
DISCLAIMER I have just obtained a copy of Justin Furstenfeld's book Crazy Making. It's not very detailed, but it contains all the lyrics to all current (The Answers - Approaching Normal) Blue October songs, and his inspiration behind them. As I said, it's not very detailed, but it's his words on every Blue October song that is in the book. I know everyone interprets a song differently from everyone else, but having the original intent behind the song will be helpful to people who don't fully understand a song. Also, any grammatical errors are not made by me, I'm putting down Justin's words exactly how he writes them. So yea... enjoy :)
Been Down: "The oldest song on Approaching. Two very sad people trying to make a happy life together. Oil and water. As much as they try... they just don't mix. The last paragraph means the most"
