Scarecrow Lyrics

Hung by the old field
the night in his eyes
and the road by his side

He's trying to show me
Who's alive in both cities
barely on fire.

Scarecrow
caught in my mind
Scarecrow not made for these times.

Clear as a diamond
the light read plain
on the back of his eyes

He'd never know
He still dreams of a bird
of a terrifying size.

But this Scarecrow
caught in my mind
Scarecrow
not made for these times

Trying to weigh him down
to soon
Glad to have him with me now

Death cold pecked bare
red collar bled white
no black heart there
no bark and no bite

Just this Scarecrow
Caught in my mind
Scarecrow
Not made for these time

Who decreed these the official lyrics? Googling yields the same lyrics all over the internet, but I hear something different to what is written. Where it says:

"He's trying to show me / Who's alive in both cities / Barely on fire"

I hear the following instead:

"He's trying to show me / It was a lightning bolt / that set his belly on fire."

Anyways, I always assumed this song was an application of the Prometheus myth. Prometheus stole the fire from Zeus (hence "lightning bolt that set his belly on fire") and then was subject to a giant eagle that pecked his liver for eternity (hence the "dreams of a bird of a terrifying size" and "death cold, pecked bare"). Also, Prometheus was strung up to a rock in the same way as a scarecrow might be, and obviously served as a deterrent to those who dared to fight for humanity even against the wishes of people in power.

If this song truly is about Finn's brother, would this explanation relate to him?

My Interpretation

@clock11022 I'm hearing that too - a lightning bolt (or ball) set his belly on fire.

It makes me think of Worzel Gummidge, but none the worse for that. Beautiful song.

Whenever I hear this I conclude that it basically is a lost Tom Waits song sang by Finn Andrews. And a beautiful one at that.

I really love slow, somber music like this and Finn makes the feeling of loneliness and sadness seem so thought-provoking and self-reflective. I can never quite figure out whether he refers to himself as a scarecrow or is it an imaginary friend of sorts (or even a real one).

Anyway, those who have a hard time fitting in will love this one. I for sure do.
