In this old house, I'm not alone
In a bedroom, a telephone
You made the call and I just stood by
I stripped the sheets and emptied out the sty

And the crowds that light the carnival
Are calling us home, calling us home

And all we want's another voice
To lead us along, lead us along
Lead us along

Even wasting my time with you
Doesn't matter if I think it through
You took the car around the bend
And ran it in the ground, let's pretend

And the crowds that light the carnival
Are calling us home, calling us home

And all we want's another voice
To lead us along, lead us along
Lead us along

I can't
Get out
Of what I'm into
With you

I can't
Get out
Of what I'm into
With you

I can't
Get out
Of what I'm into
With you

I can't
Get out
Of what I'm into
With you

I think this song is about a relationship that the singer (I’m assuming) no longer wants to be a part of.

’You made a call and I just stood by’

The other person in the relationship called, but he didn’t pick up. He no longer wanted to be with is person, so he moved.

‘I stripped the sheets and emptied out the sty.’

‘And the crowds that light the carnival Calling us home Calling us home’

Grizzly Bear is Brooklyn based, and in New York, there are carnivals all the time. He misses his home; it’s “calling” to him.

‘And all we wants another voice To lead us along To lead us along Lead us along.’

He wants another reason to go back home, to leave his situation.

‘Even wasting my time with you doesn’t matter if I think it through’

He thinks it will be okay, he’s trying to make it work, make it something its not, knowing that it’s essentially a time filler. But he knows no matter how much he thinks about it, he’ll still feel the same way.

‘You took the car around another bend Ran it in the ground, let’s pretend.’

He wants to pretend that the other person wreaked their car “ran it into the ground” for another reason for him to leave, and get out of the relationship etc.

‘I can’t get out of what I’m into with you’

No matter what he dose to leave, he can get out of the relationship. Not necessarily literally but it’s always there, there’s always something that reminds him of it. Or it could very well mean exactly what it says…

I could have totally missed the boat here but, easy come easy go….

P.s I totally agree with injun252. The black cad session version is rad!! Go check it out.

There seems to be some mistakes from what I hear. I'm gonna try to fix this to the best of my ability. If you think what I've wrote is wrong please fix it. What I don't know I'll keep the same.

In this old house I'm not alone In a bedroom a telephone

You made the call and I just stood by I stripped the sheets And emptied out the sty

And the crowds, they light the carnival calling us calling us

And all we want Another boy To lead us on (ooohh) Lead us on (ooohh) Lead us on

Even wasting the time with you Doesn't matter if I think it through

You took the car around the back And I waited by ...

And the crowds, they light the carnival calling us calling us

And all we ask And all the boys Lead us on (oohh) Lead us on (ooohh) Lead us on

I can't get out Of what I'm into with you (4x)

My interpretation; the part after "think it through" sounds more like cord or card to me rather than car...

In this old house, I’m not alone In a bedroom, a telephone

You made a call and I just stood by I stripped the sheets and emptied out the sty.

And the crowds that light the carnival Calling us home Calling us home

And all they want, another voice To lead us all home lead us all home lead us all home.

Even wasting the time with you, doesn’t matter if I think it through

You took a cord around and I would bend and ran it in the ground, let’s pretend.

And the crowds that light the carnival Calling us home Calling us home

And all they ask and all they want

    Lead us all home
    Lead us all home
    Lead us all home

I can’t get out of what I’m into with you. (4x)

    My Interpretation

    i'm fairly certain it's

"you took the car around another bend ran it in the ground, let’s pretend"

i think rainandrey is right, because they're definitely saying something more than "calling us" and "lead us on" at those parts.

It's "that light" not "they light".
