Maybe it's about letting go of grudges from the past. Finding your own faith that is true to you. And knowing that your mind is the creation of all you see, and that all you see is the creation of your mind.
I think this is about a breakup, but clearly the singer still loves the person who broke their heart. Why is every song I love about heartbreak? I can never use the lyrics as my away message because I'd sound permanently emo-- LAME!
I think it might be about a relationship but maybe its literally about where they recorded the album too? I dont know much about Veckatimest Island on account of being at the other side of the atlantic to America but I know they recorded the album there and loved its seclusion.

every song i like tends to be about heartbreak or depression or isolation or... let's just round it off and say... they're all sad. and i play songs on blip.fm, and everyone's posting all these poppy, happy songs, and all i can think is how they must think that i am the most miserable person on the face of the planet, that i just sulk about and wallow in my mistery all day.

Like most songs, this is probably about a relationship, but what if it were written from the perspective of a Cuban refugee sailing to a place near Key West? Both a lover (or friends, family) and a native culture are being left behind (as well as the oppressors), although the voice seems optimistic that the "last word" hasn't been exchanged between all parties.
hmm...I think the song is about the location where the band recorded this album. Veckatimest is a small, secluded island that's part of Massachusetts. According to Wikipedia, it registered as uninhabited by the 2000 census. The lyrics do give a sense of seclusion: "In the end (You'll never find me now)" or "Avert your eyes from all of this"
And the lyrics do seem to imply that they band enjoyed it there, since they refer to it as a haven. At the same time, it seems like they're wondering how they'll readjust to society once they leave: "In regards to the last word/It's not the last you'll hear"
I think it's a great opener for the album...it's expansive and intricate, and at times it's slightly eerie...much like the rest of the songs on the album.
I think this song really goes into depth about the pointlessness of Southern existence, and the broad moral territory the band as a whole has grown to inhabit.
There's actually a very clever sexual innuendo here. I don't want to give it away, though--I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader!
