Girls on the Avenue Lyrics

Girls on the avenue, they're trying to get you in,
Strolling by with their rosebud smiles,
They're all dressed up to kill, lean on the windowsill,
Looking your way with eyes of fire

But don't you slip, don't you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue

Friday night, see the girls on the avenue,
Like a child at big store windows you feel confused
So many girls on the avenue

Girls on the avenue, know how to get you in,
Casting out sighs like tricks from a hat,
All the Miss Lonely Hearts, oh they look awful hard,
Then sometimes they seem as fragile as glass

But don't you slip, don't you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue

Friday night, see the girls on the avenue,
Like a child at big store windows you feel confused
So many girls on the avenue

Dick Clap was interviewed on radio (or was it Spicks and Specks) about the lyrics of Girls on The Avenue. He said that he was living in a house in The Avenue at Rose Bay, in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. He'd walk past another house that was occupied by a group of young women who used to bother him. You know, "Hiiiiiiiiiiii, why don't you come in for a coffee" etc. He assured we listeners that the song was not about the Cross or Darlo, or maybe even Premier Lane. He may well have been living in The Avenue, but we Aussies are good bullshit artists so I don't know what to believe.

Memory

@farmertimbo Clearly found them very attractive but a worry at the same time..I love the song because it really celebrates good looking, happy young women.

@farmertimbo I lived on The Avenue Rose Bay 1975 when this written. A few of us had to pass his place (we didn’t drive then) when we were going out for the night. It’s only recently I was told he lived on The Avenue when we did.
